After riding these several times I have noticed a few flaws that must be mentioned and I have taken this down from a five star to a three.
One, the reverse is extremely weak, and I cannot emphasize the term extremely. I mentioned this before, but I thought that the zero turn would alleviate the need for it. That isn't the case, and if you're ever in a situation where you have to reverse with the slightest obstacle or the slightest incline you're going to have to get out and move the Mecha kit yourself. This is very disappointing and is also exasperated by the plastic coaster wheels in a situation where you are just on a sidewalk with squares that have the slightest ledge on them.
Two, it is incredibly easy to get this thing stuck coming off a sidewalk onto the road. I'm not talking about coming off a curb. I'm talking about where you normally come off a sloped entrance/exit that the Segway S barely even notices when you are riding it. The reason for this is that the front bumper overhang is too long. You have to constantly steer this thing so it goes up an incline at an angle
Three, the bottle holders come off way too easily when you brush against something. We don't ride with them anymore. There isn't a lot of reason to. You're most-likely not going to go through four of these bottles in one sitting. The pellets take four hours to prepare so you're going to learn not to just waste them - also, you can't buy replacements as of yet (12/27/2021).
Four, the coaster wheels are just downright pathetic. This company has a variety of rubber tires/wheels for their electric scooters that would have been perfect for the coaster wheels on this thing. They are not super-stable and I'm going to be looking for something to replace these if possible.
I still recommend this, but not so much as a personal transporter and definitely not for people who are over 220 lbs. The Segway Ninebot S can handle people that are over 220 lbs very well but not with this Mecha Kit. I saw a review that this thing works great for somebody 295lbs and I cannot see how that is possible. I doubt that the reverse would even work at that point. The most optimal place to use these is in a place where there aren't any cars like a parking lot. Your neighbors might not like a ton of water bullets in their lawn. They don't dissolve quickly and don't shoot at cars. These could cause the slightest mini dents - especially if you repeatedly hit the same spot.
If you're not interested in shooting each other with water bullets then get the Go Kart. The nighttime shooting is just flat-out fun - it really does look like you're shooting lasers. The pellets actually hurt just a little bit. They are like very tiny paintballs that don't explode. The description that they are water bullets is accurate but also makes it seem like they break on impact. That is not the case. I highly recommend wearing gloves on a colder night to protect your fingers. Wearing shorts might result in tiny bruises.
*** Original Review ***
We have had Ninebot S's since last Christmas, have go kart kits, the Ninebot S Max and the Segway Ninebot ES3Plus electric Scooter. I didn't know what to expect from this as there aren't any detailed reviews as of yet (today is 12/1821). I am pleasantly surprised with the quality of this product after testing it out. I initially bought two of these for the kids for Christmas. After setting both up so they're ready Christmas day and testing it out I ordered a third from Amazon which came very quickly and in good shape.
First, make sure you put the water bullets in water right away. It takes four hours for the water bullets to fully absorb what they are capable of absorbing. There is a video on Amazon for this product that explains this. It is very easy to do.
The Mecha Kit has it's own power source (battery pack) that you should charge up fully before using. It comes about half-charged. It doesn't plug into the Ninebot S through a wire like the Go Kart does. Also, update your Ninebot S to the latest firmware before beginning to synchronize.
The setup is very easy much like the Go Kart kits. There is slightly more assembly involved but not much. The Velcro straps hold the Mecha Kit and the Ninebot S firmly together. Make sure that you hear a click when you put the joystick arms on. The metal chassis is very solid and the plastic is thick. It is comfortable to sit in.
The Mecha Kit communicates through Bluetooth for synchronization and operation. This is the most-impressive part. Everything from steering, accelerating, braking, shooting, etc. happens through wireless communication. If you used the Segway app before then you already know how slick it is. For those of you who haven't, this app does everything you'd want it to do and more. You configure the speed limit mode, the shooting mode, the lighting effects, record your rides and will remotely control the Mecha Kit driving and shooting functions if you want it to. This can be done with somebody sitting in it too.
The speed is plenty adequate. Any faster and you'll risk tipping this over on a hard turn. This Mecha Kit has a higher center of gravity than the Go Kart kit and has coaster wheels that allow for the kit to operate like a turret. It is quite stable and safe, but this thing could tip if you turn on a decline or incline too hard.
The driving controls take some time to get used to since the joysticks only go forward and backwards and you have to get used to making turns by letting up on one side while going forward with the other. After an hour or two you'll have mastered it. The zero turn capability is great and the ride is very smooth despite the small coaster wheels.
What is also really neat about this outside of the water bullet function is that it is made for a sit-down ride. This is the first Segway Ninebot product that provides this capability natively with four wheels below you. This should appeal to adults using this and it will appeal to adults who are planning on having a younger child use it. My wife will not use the Segway S as she is afraid of falling off but she did like driving this around. The lighting effects look cool and the green laser is pretty helpful when aiming the water bullets.
Segway Ninebot is doing an amazing job with these kits. They seem to be more of a tech-based company rather than just a hoverboard/scooter company because a lot of what they do revolves around these enhancements and controlling everything from the app.
The thing is slooww, at first. You see, Segway wants you to complete certain exercises on the app and ride the Mecha kit for a certain amount of distance before they unlock the faster speeds. Once you get the Sports mode unlocked (through the app), the fun really starts to happen and now you feel like you are getting somewhere, faster.
I would be a little weary of Sport mode for younger kids or for the squeamish because looks like you can flip this thing if you lose control or try to turn too fast. Just make sure to not turn on faster modes until ready.
My only real complaint is the super low profile of this thing, so even going onto a driveway can get this stuck because of the very low front end. I have to go up at an angle and with speed to scrape my way though. :)
The back casters are plastic and are adequate, I was thinking of changing them out but if I put even slightly bigger casters, then that will lower the front end even more. :(
Overall, I recommend this as it is still very fun and with the faster speeds you will be able to "turn" a little faster because at the slower speeds, it is "uugghh" torture. You find ways to make it work better as you try different things. And of course, always check for the latest firmwares as they add goodies and updates.
It by a chair on WHEELS. I am saddened @ the idea. Like video games sitting @ home. It's taking away the persons lack of EXERCISE.
