I did my research, found that the parent company Huami is a manufacturer for Xiaomi products which are known for great hardware but okayish software so I knew what I was getting, and the Amazfit GTS had just about everything I needed.
You open it, download the Zepp app, then connect via Bluetooth. It's honestly not that bad.
Pros:
-1.5 WEEK BATTERY LIFE. Seriously, the battery life on this beats Apple watches any day.
-Looks pretty even after 2 months. I got a lot of compliments for the watch before telling them it's an Amazfit.
-Comfy: I never had any issues with it leaving a mark on my skin. I do take it off before showering and other than charging it (which only takes abiut 2 hours to go full charge), I ALWAYS have this on.
-At $100 this is a bargain. I'd recommend to anyone getting it as a first time watch.
-Has a phone finder: Rings your phone if you can't find it and your phone can find it when it vibrates. Underrated feature.
Cons:
-$150 is too much. It's a great $100 watch.
-Heart monitor was passable, it gets rem sleep but not short naps or anything less than 3 hours from testing it for 2 months.
-Software is mediocre: Zepp is a mediocre app that gets the job done. Has no built in speaker. It's the minimum amount required to make this watch work, which is a shame since the hardware runs silky smooth.
Overall, I love it. It's not an Apple Watch but I didn't need those features.

I think, as an entry level, this is a good solid option. I've had it for several weeks now and have used it daily, so I've gotten to see how it does with battery life, functions, accuracy, etc. Overall I'm really happy with it! The battery definitely doesn't last me two weeks, but in the past two weeks I've only charged it twice after the initial charge/set up, and it charged to full battery in about 30-45 minutes. When I did charge it I did it the first time when it was at 20% and the last time it was still at about 40%, so it didn't NEED to be charged. I like the Zepp App that works with the watch, though I've noticed the stress monitor isn't giving me any data. Everything else seems to work well. There's a ton in there! Some people mentioned that there were only a few face options - not true. In the app you can tap on your device and the first thing on the menu is "watch face". From there you can choose from over 50 watch faces, or customize your own. Within the watch face you can also decide what you want displayed, etc.
The only glitch I've noticed is that a day or so ago the step count wasn't working properly. I would move around and notice that it wasn't adding new steps on, which then affected some of my goal achievements. I was frustrated because I'd only had it two weeks and had seen some reviews of people saying the watch stopped being accurate after a couple weeks. I looked around for info, and went through the app menu to see if I could find anything, update something, etc. In the Settings menu there's a "Behavior tagging" option. If you tap on that you go to a screen where you can choose an activity to monitor. The little "i" for info button said that it's a way to monitor for inaccuracies. I chose the "walk" option, started it on my phone, then just did normal activity where I was moving around in my house for a few minutes. Stopped it, and noticed that after that the step counter was working properly again. It seems as though it helped recalibrate things. Just wanted to share that for anyone who might have the same issue.
Overall I'm really happy with my Amazfit GTS and would recommend it if you want a good starter smart watch.
Good:
Multi-day battery is the way to go, and this watch does it well. Lasts well over a week for me.
Music control is acceptably easy to use and access
The moment I turn on my phone after the plane has landed, the watch has the updated time.
Is not inexpensive, but it is not 600 or 800 bucks. So I will not be happy if I break it or lose it... but I will be 6x-8x times less unhappy.
Screen is bright and very readable in many outdoor and indoor conditions, very responsive. The auto-on feature has not left me hanging, very responsive too. Also, as I toss and turn in bed, it doesn't light up to often.
Bad:
Notification handling is atrocious. It is very basic. Essentially, unless you clear a notification in the phone itself, the notification will keep on coming up as a new one over and over. I thought I was going crazy, until one day I saw a notification pop up again just after I had cleared them on the watch. Then I figured that I need to make sure I clear them IN THEIR RESPECTIVE APPS... so not just dismissing them from the notification pull down, but inside their originating app: e.g. you get a text message... you need to go INTO the Messages app and make sure it is not marked "unread" if not it will bug you about half a dozen times.
Weather syncing fails a lot, you have to open the Zepp app to fix. Happens a lot after a long period of disconnection from the phone.
**Rubber watch band gave me a rash. **This might me a me thing. I also hate the rubber ones, and quickly replaced it with a metal band.
