I put the batteries in. It didn't work. I took batteries out of 
one side to make sure I put them in right. I just got more
batteries and tried another set. It worked perfectly, just as 
the instructions said it would. I love it. I was having to clean 
my garage can lid multiple times a day. With the automatic 
opening lid, it's so much better. It works great. It stays open 
for 6 seconds, with a light count down to 0 then it closes. 
It also has a setting where if you stay in front of the panel it 
stops and stays open until you move. It has handles on the
sides to easily move it. Another nice feature is the 
bag-holder frame. The bag isn't on the outside of the can, 
but neatly tucked inside. I highly recommend this garbage 
can. You can also turn off the sensor to save your battery 
life if you're not going to use it for 24 hours or longer. I love
this can. It's perfect for my needs. I gave it a 5 star rating. It 
is so helpful to me. I hope you can try it and love it also.

Great motion-detector kitchen garbage can.

This is an update to a previous review.  I received this trash can and loved how it looked, but the sensor never saw my hand and refused to open.  The company contacted me and sent me a new lid.  The new lid sees me every time I wave my hand and opens smoothly.  I keep it in my mud room for random trash as people enter from the garage and to handle all the laundry trash. The batteries lasted a long time and I love the ease of it opening itself and counting down to closing when my hands are full or messy.  This is a great trash can and I love how fancy it looks.

Fun trash can

Best trash can I ever had. Swiping near the lid panel activates the motion detector and the lid opens automatically. The lid stays open for 6 seconds then closes. However, if your scraping dishes and hover over can, it will stay open until you walk away. Very streamline design. I like how it rests flat up against the refrigerator without any space behind. The stainless steel matches all my appliances. A very sturdy and attractive addition to the kitchen. The lid detector does need 4 “C” batteries to function and are not included.

Space Age Trash Can A++

So we've had step-on garbage cans for as long as I can remember. They seem to all fall into two categories: 

They open up too far when you step on the lever, then the top stays up until you push it back down. 

Or two, they don't open up far enough. 

Our last was particularly annoying in that it'd open up, then the lid would fall back down half way and deflect unknowing people's trash away. Funny at first, but super annoying.

I digress, enter the answer to all our trash problems, the BH&G 13.7 gallon motion controlled trash can.

The quick version is that some real thought went into this trash can and it is about as much as you could want out of a trash can.

What do I mean? Well, for example, they designed it so you have to let your hand hover above the sensor for a scant second. This tiny detail makes it so the trash never opens up on its own from people walking by or things of that nature. Second, when it does open up, there's a little countdown timer that displays. Starts at 6, closes when it reaches zero. But it gets better! If you're actively putting items into the trash, the timer pauses, so it'll never shut the lid on you as you're using it.

There's a ring to clamp the trash bag in place, plenty of breathing room so the bag doesn't get stuck. The bottom drip tray is removable to clean. 

As far as trash cans go? I really don't think there's any space for improvement. They even put little recesses on the corners of the lid, so if the batteries go flat or what have you, you can still easily open and close the lid manually. And the motor and mechanism they used is super quiet, another surprising but appreciated feature.

Like I said, some real thought and research went into the design of this thing. As far as trash cans go, I highly doubt there's a better one out there because I can't think of even a single thing I would change.

Can't get any better.

I love the size and shape of this trash pail. I also really like the handles on the sides. I like that it's rectangular and fits better into a corner in my kitchen. There is a plastic ring that goes around the top of the trash pail to hold up the plastic bag and keeps it on the inside so that it doesn't show on the outside. As far as trash pails go this is a great looking trash pail. Now onto the not so good. The garbage can came in a box that was not crushed in any way. The box appeared to be in perfect condition however the trash pail was dented on two sides in the back and a corner in the front. I circled the dents in the pictures. While no one is seeing the back of the trash pail I wonder if it left the manufacturing facility dented. Also the motion sensor which I love the idea of is not perfect. Sometimes a quick wave of the hand opens the lid and sometimes I could be waving 4 times before it opens. I do like that it closes itself after a few seconds. This garbage can has the potential to be amazing. If it was not dented upon receipt and the sensor worked better I would absolutely love it. For now it's good enough and I still really like it in spite of having to waive my hand more than once at the sensor.

Looks great and mostly works

Touching a garbage can isn't particularly hygienic, especially in the kitchen or bathroom environment. Forget the traditional trash cans that you must open and close every time you open an ingredient cooking and replace them with the new generation trash cans with automatic opening. No doubt, automatic sensor trash cans are improving our daily lives thanks to their integrated movement sensors. Their operating principle is simple: it opens automatically when movement is observed near the opening. With a motion sensor trash receptacle, you will automatically open and close the lid of the bin without needing to touch the bin physically. When the infrared motion sensor detects the motion of your hand the lid opens automatically. The hands-free technology makes a motion sensor trash can very hygienic and convenient because you do not touch it to deposit waste. 
This BH&G receptacle has an Intelligent Sensor Mechanism: Infrared fields that sense the areas above and in front of the can, so it opens automatically and effortlessly with just the wave of your hand. Black mirror like door finish, square, elegant profile, and design. Uses 4 “C batteries (not included). IR touch free operation, bag ring, drip pan, slow close lid with digital countdown display, stay open sensor, dual chrome handles, non-slip base. Soft close lid with consistent lid operation so there's no banging or loud noise with specially designed dampers that allow the lid to open easily but provide enough resistance, so it silently eases down gently. Uses common 13-gal trash bags. I really like this trash can, from looks to operation, a lot of pluses. Packaged very well for shipment. The major drawback might be that it does not have the ability to use an AC adaptor. I will have to see how battery life goes since it also is not recommended to use rechargeable batteries. Don't stress, be happy - actually read the directions for where the sensors are for opening or staying open before use. Simple enough in concept but somehow, I just never do. 
Life is messy sometimes, but your trash doesn't have to be. So, whether you want to cut down on germs or footsteps, this trash can is up to the task.

Life is messy.

This is a well-designed trash can with many convenient features. The can is 24”tall, 15”wide and 11” deep…holding a standard 13 gallon trash bag. The can features a no-show liner design…there is a removable holding rim inside. I didn't use the feature due to using this in my laundry room. The item is made of fingerprint resistant stainless steel and will resist rust and corrosion. There are two hinged handles on the sides that make it convenient to move. There is also a drip pan in the bottom of the can to help capture a leaky bag and make clean up a little easier. The trash can uses a dual motion activated sensor located on top. I've learned it works best when you don't wave to close to the sensor. The sensor can be a little testy at times. However, you don't want it too sensitive and opening every time anything gets near it. The sensor has a digital display that counts down from 6 seconds. This lets you know when it will close. The lid will remain open if you are standing over it. So, this allows you to use it for a prolonged time without it constantly closing. The lid is smooth when opening and closing…no catapulting or slamming. The can operates with 4 C batteries. They state it will open 15,000 times before battery replacement….we'll see. Overall, I've been pleased with this trash can and would recommend it.

Well-Designed Trash Can

This is a nice looking trash can, the automatic lid is a nice touch although delay configurability would have been a nice enhancement. It basically stays open with a ‘6' on the display for 54 seconds and then counts down from 6 to 1 and then closes… so closes after one minute total. 

It does have a top and side sensor… The top sensor will open the lid and start the timer, while the side sensor will pause the timer as long as there is movement to the side. You cannot trigger open from the side, nor delay timer by activating the top sensor, they each have distinct functions. There is a master power button on the side that turns the sensor aspect on or off. When powered on there is an initial delay as the sensors calibrate so you must wait about 10 seconds for the first trigger. There is also about a 5 second delay between trigger activations as the sensor resets. All this is normal for motion sensors.

The quality is good but the top ring and bottom frame ould be a but thicker. The steel does dent fairly easily but it is pretty solid overall.

The big negative here is the power system. It uses 4 x ‘C' cells and they are NOT included. On top of that it drains them fairly quickly and it drains a set of NIMH rechargeable batteries REALLY, REALLY, FAST. Even low-self-discharge full sized ‘C' rechargeable (brand new) batteries will only last 3 days before not having enough power to even start the unit. Also, a new set of AA Alkaline (with adaptors to fit in ‘C' slots) will also not work as the draw seems to be to high to power it. On top of all this there is no DC wall-power plug so batteries are a requirement. I really don't know what the designers/engineers were thinking when they decided on the power options. A full set of brand new ‘C' Alkalines only lasted about a week. Granted it is possible I got a defective unit, so please compare my battery experiences with other reviewers to get a far estimate on battery life. I also always leave the unit powered on 24/7 since having to turn it off/on defeats the purpose of a sensor trash can in my opinion

Unfortunately I would not recommend this product due to its constant need for (rather expensive) batteries.

Nice garbage can but one major flaw

they are very appealing to look at. they actually work fine. there are just a few things that I would improve upon. the ring that holds the trash bags is so delicate, that I will not let anyone take the trash out but me. the stainless is so delicate, it dings easily. lastly, the lid lifts a little with every open. I love the way they look and operate...we have 2. buts its my job to do the trash so the kids and man wont break them! lol good for price, I must say. again, I have 2!

good for the price!

Poor quality. Had a burning smell after 8 months of use. The metal from the center wheel is grinding off.  In my photo You can see metal particles.  So, now, the wheel won't grip to spin blade.   And runs loudly.  Certainly not worth the money.  Waste of money and now need to purchase a new blender.  Do not buy.
