Power to get the job done on 1.25 acre lot
5 Stars
Power to get the job done on 1.25 acre lot
I have a 1.25 acre lot. Roughly half is taken by the house, the pool, the pond and an area where the trees throw so much shade the grass does not grow. I also purchased the trimmer and blower combination. With all that, I have a total of 3 batteries. The family helps when I am working in the yard, meaning we will have the mower and the trimmer running at the same time. The three batteries keep us going without stopping till we are done. The mower has plenty of power (certainly as much power as any gas powered mower I have used) and is very well built (better than any gas powered mower I have used).I was a little concerned about not having a powered drive train considering I do have small, but steep hills in the yard. The mower is light and my 10 year-old daughter can, with effort, get it up the hill. I can do it relatively easily. The mower is quiet: my little kids can push it without being intimidated. My 8 year-old was given a corner of the lot; he loved it so much he kept going and more than double is allotted grass responsibility. This may seem to be an insignificant point, but the motor being quiet allows me to give the 'little ones' more responsibility and takes one more thing for me to do off my plate. I would never be able to get my 8 (boy), 10 (girl) or 13 (girl) near a loud, gas-powered motor; and besides, they could never pull the cord hard enough to get it going. The trimmer has more than enough power. The blower makes quick work of 'sweeping' the front patio of leaves and the pool area of dust/dirt/sand. The 30 min broom job is now about 5 minutes.I contemplated getting cabled equipment. Considering the extra cost for high-current, yard tough, long cable, and the hassle of pulling cable through bushes, around rocks and trees, and the power these high-voltage, brushless tools bring, I see no advantage.Keep in mind that high-voltage motors run more efficiently than low-voltage. High-voltage allows for lower current for the same power (P=V*I, which decreases losses due to resistance (V=I*R). Also note that brushless motors run more effenciently than brushed, and are more reliable. Brushes in motors inherently impose additional friction on the spinning motor, and more electrical resistance, and at some point wear out.The high-voltage, brushless motors run with batteries are the future; don't waste money on anything else. I see no benefit whatsoever to having the gas-powered mower (or gas-powered anything for that matter for 'smaller' yards). No gas, no running to the gas station, no storing gas, no dealing with gas preservatives, no stains on the ground, no oil, no filter, no stink, no pulling wildly on cords that sometimes break (I've had to replace a few of these), no pulling on cords where the gas mix is not right or the choke is set incorrectly or who knows why the thing won't start (who has not experienced this? routinely?), and lastly - relatively speaking - no noise. Plug in battery, push button, push mower till done, fold and stand on tail to save space when not in use. Your maintenance for these tools will likely come down to replacing trimmer string and sharpening mower blades.See the photos and the video of working through high, wet grass. If you want to get your yard done reliably and without a fuss, this is it.The snapper is built to last. Highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and get it.
