Good product, good price. No problems.
I recieved my bucket of oatmeal today. Unlike a lot of the negative reviews, mine came properly sealed. Many reviews mention the difficulty in opening the bucket. I suspect these people may have never bought a sealed 5 gallon bucket before. You must remove the band that surrounds the lid and then pry it up all the way around. Square lids are more difficult to remove the first time than round ones are. But after the lid is off if you slice the lid at each corner it is much easier to use subsequently. Several negative reviews also mention that the bucket was only 3/4 full. This is true, but also to be expected if you think about how much rolled oats can settle. I don't feel cheated because of this. As for the oats themselves, they are fresh and smell tasty but I haven't eaten them yet.. I bought them for my dog (not a prepper) and I suspect he will like them just fine. Bottom line, ignore the whiny negative reviews. This is a good product at a good price.

I haven’t tried the oats, but I will encourage you to consider purchasing your own pail. It’s best to be prepared in emergency situations. I’m giving the pail of oats five stars - I bought the ten pound pail at a reasonable price and I have never been served bad oats.

If you pay any attention to the news lately you will find that the world is facing some scary and uncertain times. This has prompted me to think a little more about being prepared in the event of an emergency. I purchased one of these a few months ago and was so happy with it that I purchased a few more buckets. The oats were fresh and tasted great. I have actually Started purchasing these instead of shopping for oats at the store for our breakfast because this is a better value and you can reuse the buckets.
My one complaint, however, is that it is extremely hard to open. I have to use the end of a hammer to pry the lid off. For normal every day consumption, I portion the oats into ziploc backs so I don't have to go through the fiasco of opening them everyday. In an emergency, however, the seal is great for long term freshness.

Still sitting on my shelf waiting for the right time to open it up and dig in. Good Quality Company.
Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2020
I bought these because I wanted to add to my food storage. It says right on the package its good for 30 years. The seal is like an actual manufactured seal where you have to remove the plastic strip to open it so I am confident it will stay sealed. I also love how the packages are easily stackable. Its great for long term storage in smaller closets. When I was researching what it would take to store food, (the food, a bucket graded for food with a sealing lid, an oxygen absorber, etc) this product was very reasonably priced as it comes all ready to be stored away. Nothing else to do. AND if your not wanting to use this long term, the price of the oats themselves are comparable to buying 10lbs in the grocery store. So as a bulk buy, its still a great deal and you get a reusable bucket.

Augason Quick Oats are good oats, steamed and rolled thin, packed in a sturdy air-tight container. These oats will keep a very long time, at least the claimed 30 years. You will need tools to open the container, which along with inadequate oxygen absorbent is the reason these oats got 4 but did not get 5 stars. While the bucket has an o-ring built into the lid and will clearly keep for decades, it is not designed to be opened easily and is a hassle to open.

Extended long-term storage of oats requires that the oats be rolled thin and steamed, which creates "quick" oats. This process practically sterilizes the oats and hydrolyzes (chemically bonds water to) the starch in the oats. This creates a more stable chemical configuration, making oxidation the only real threat to the longevity of the oats. You must still cook the oats for a minute prior to eating them because steamed oats partially dehydrolyze as soon as the exposure to steam stops, and humans can only digest fully hydrolyzed starches.

The only realistic difference between quick oats and so-called old-fashioned rolled oats is a slight difference in texture due to the oats being rolled a little thinner. Old-fashioned rolled oats do not keep as well, not only because they are not sterilized but also because unhydrolized starch breaks down spontaneously over a period of years, even in the absence of oxygen.

Some reviews state that the lack of a mylar inner bag will cause the product to degrade. In my opinion, the bucket with its integrated o-ring seal is adequate and makes a mylar inner bag irrelevant. Other reviewers state the oxygen absorber is inadequate. I did the math and found that the oxygen absorber included is about a quarter of the size needed to absorb the oxygen in 10 gallons of air, so some oxygen will remain to slightly degrade the oats. I'm a little surprised that the manufacturer skimped on the oxygen absorbent. The oats will still keep for at least 30 years but it has to be said the oats would benefit from more oxygen absorbent.

Good quick oats, which will keep for the stated 30 years, but the bucket is a real pain and the oxygen absorbent is inadequate.

Just baffled by some of the negative reviews here. I have been buying from this company for more than a year and buying a lot as I finally saw the light about prepping. Every single item as arrived in under a day, perfectly wrapped, with a brand new sell by date (meaning I have the full thirty years). I'm trusting the reviews about taste because this is for emergencies and will not be opened until there is one (and there will be between the climate crisis and other pandemics and weather emergencies). I priced out buying my own oats, buying Mylar bags, oxygen tablets, etc. etc. and this ended up being a great deal. I also did that last summer but decided it was far easier to buy one of these as I continue to prep more mindfully. Love this company. Buy the way, I ordered this at 2:00 am [how I handle insomnia! ;)] and it arrived at 3:00 pm...the same day! Wow. Now that's speedy delivery.
