Something to note that I wish I would have read in the description that matters to a consumer which is to say there is a manual zoom lever on the lens that will easily expand your display size 15 - 25" more from any throw distance with a manual focus ring to sharpen the zoom size. You can watch this projector during the day however I don't actually recommend unless you darken your room with paint, blackout shades, and light gab blockers if your serious about your media setup. I have faux blinds and it's still enjoyable during the day but just a little washed out compared to a darker room at night for obvious reasons.
The only negative feature is lack of horizontal keystone so consider mounting dead center. My application projecting from 16' throw distance and 1.5' left from the center of the room with the projector swiveled to the center of screen. This works however you can slightly notice it on your screen but your guests likely won't. All that to say, this projector is Amazing!!!
The brightness on this is amazing-- I have no issues watching sports on it during the daytime with the drapes open. And at night, with all the drapes closed and the lights off? It's better than seeing a movie at the Arclight. Watch something with a lot of really bright colors, like Black Panther or Thor, and you'll be amazed at how alive everything looks.
But for as great as it looks during bright scenes, it's horrible at dark scenes or shadow details. Yes, that's always a problem with projectors, but my old 1080 DLP projector did a much better job at shadow detail- on this, you barely get any subtlety at all, it's like one giant black blob. Even HDR content like The Grand Tour doesn't look that great- on an LED TV, scenes from inside the car render the outside landscape in full color, while still showing the details in the shadows of the interior reasonably well-- I can differentiate between the seat and the back wall of the car. On this, it's all just black.
I bought this when it was on sale for $999, so I'm willing to live with that lack of detail-- it was a relatively cheap way to upgrade to 4K, and when it looks great, it really looks extraordinary.
As far as noise goes, I think that this is quiet, but the last projector was really noisy, so I might be extremely biased. Right now, this is mounted 7' from the floor and 5' in front of us, and the fan can only be heard during the quietest of scenes. (The old projector could be heard any time something wasn't exploding on screen.)
Two things to point out-- first, download and review the size chart to make sure that it will work in your room. I have about a 20' throw, and my last two projectors had no issue shrinking the image down to fit my 120" screen. However, at 20', this projector wouldn't go below 150", which was a problem. I had to purchase a ceiling mount and move it forward about 6' to make it work with my screen.
That brings me to the second point-- this projector lacks any sort of lens shift. It also assumes that the projector will be aligned to either the bottom or the top of the screen. This is great if you're sitting it on a conference room table, but not so great if you want to shelf-mount it at the back of your home theater. If you want it above and behind you, then it's either got to be flipped upside-down or you need to tilt it downward at least 30 degrees. Not an issue if you ceiling mount it, but between the issue with the throw distance and this, what I thought was going to be a five-minute swap out of the old projector turned into a week of ordering new parts and hanging new wiring.
At the end of the day, you need to decide where you want to spend your money-- do you want 4K, or do you want really good shadow detail? If you want the shadows, stick with 1080 and put that extra $500 into that.
