In our region, it’s almost time to plant (February). I hooked it up for a test and water started leaking through the battery compartment. It’s been inside reading books and watching Netflix through our winter… which gets a few days under 20° (though no snow).
It may indeed be a fluke. In the other hand, who knows how long it had been in non-climate-controlled warehouses before it got to me? There are so many variables. Being the person I am, though, I bought 2! I’m going to set up the second one and hope that it lasts longer.
Like I said, it’s an excellently designed product. I would buy it again.
The device is pretty heavy and it does come with a metal rod that should be bolted to the side of the house to give it some extra support. Unfortunately the rod comes down at a roughly 45 degree angle and ends up being located by ny poured concrete walls, so it was basically impossible to bolt the stand to the side of the house. I ended up putting a small piece of wood up against the house and screwing the bolt into that. It works but is not as secure as the wood can move around as opposed to a bolt in the house.
So far the device itself hasn't leaked but the hose connectors do - it's really tough to get hoses to attach to anything without a little bit of water leaking. However the good news is that the shutoffs work well so they don't leak 24/7
My biggest disappointment however is the manual override button. This works great for those impromptu waterings where you don't have an available sprinkler, the area is too oddly shaped for a sprinkler or you just need to fill a bucket, wash the car, the dog etc. I use it to water the flowers at the front of the house that a sprinkler is not really going to get very well without wasting a lot of water.
However, the manual override can only be used on the 1st outlet. This means you can only use water from one of the 3 hoses in an impromptu session. Not great if you need to use water in several locations at irregular times. I fixed this by adding a 2 way splitter to the first outlet and running two hoses - one to a sprinkler that I use to water a certain area manually and the other is attached to a hose to allow me to water the flowers or wash the car when I feel like it. The splitter allows me to choose which area I want to water for 10 mins with one push of the button and 1 toggle of the splitter. As a result of this manual process, I excluded the time process from this outlet and only have the other 2 outlets set up for their programs.
The other major downside is that you can only use one outlet at a time so you need to carefully plan your watering. This may not be as big of a deal as you get more coverage when only one hose is in use, but it means you cant water the front and side lawn at the same time. You also cannot use the manual feature either and more importantly, if you are using the manual feature when a scheduled water is to take place, the schedule will not occur. This does complicate things if you have a small watering window and you need to water a large area. I like to water in the evening so the water isn't immediately evaporated in the sun and using this device means watering two areas takes twice as long as iif I ran them both at once from separate taps which also means I can't use the manual override for twice the period. During the summer I make sure I water the flowers manually before 7pm, have zone 2 run from 705 to 805 and then zone 3 run from 805-905pm
The rain delay feature is nice although it is a manual process. If rain is forecast, you push the button and it stops watering for 24, 47 or 72 hours which is really handy - however if you wish to cancel the rain delay you rotate the dial to off and then back on to reset the timer again.
Note the timer repeat is either hourly or daily and the days are every 2, 3,4 etc. There is no ability to only water on Mon, Wed, Friday. Depending on your HOA this could be a problem if they want even numbered houses to water on certain days of the week. Also if you were watering every 2 days to comply with an even numbered day water restriction and use the rain delay for 24 hours, you could also end up being watering on the wrong day.
The good news is that so far it works well, there have been no leaks and my grass and flowers look nice and I don't have to keep running outside to turn the tap on and off or move hoses around the yard. I can just put out multiple hoses and let this take care of the watering.
The manual override only being usable on one hose is probably my biggest drawback to this device and it's quite a big drawback. I would probably really give this a 3.5 star but not on Amazon.
These timers are easy to attach, easy to program and easy to manually control. We've been using Orbit timers for a few years now. In May of 2015, we bought 2 Orbit 3-outlet timers for the first time, model 56082 from Amazon. We bought another 3-outlet Orbit timer, as well as 2 single outlet Orbit timers locally. Five timers in all: 3 of the 3-outlet times and 2 of the 1-outlet timers. Then in May of 2017, we bought another 3-outlet timer from Amazon to replace one that had stopped working. And in May of 2018, we bought another single outlet timer from Amazon to replace one that had stopped working.
It never occurred to us to seek a replacement or refund from Orbit, because they did work for us for awhile, even watering everything on our property while we vacationed. We were impressed. And we were not aware that they had a 6 year warranty.
Last year we unhooked all of our perfectly functioning Orbit timers, removed the batteries, cleaned them, and put them in storage, like we always do. This year, we pulled them out, put in new batteries, and attempted to program them for watering. To our consternation, we discovered that none of the 3-outlet timers would program correctly, would not turn off even when we switched them to off and would not respond to manual control. An outlet might work or...it might not. It was just random what these timers would do. They're designed to run one station at a time, but the first one wouldn't turn off, but the second one would begin, so that 2 outlets were running at the same time on the same timer and they would not shut off unless we turned the water off. And one of the single timers did that same thing [not responding to the programming].
Now we couldn't trust any of them to do our watering and/or function correctly. We have a water well and the possibility of these things coming on and staying on while we're on vacation or otherwise gone for a few days runs the risk of flooding our watering areas and/or ruining our very expensive water well.
So, we decided to buy all new Orbit timers to replace all of the non-working ones. On June 22, 2020, we ordered from Amazon 3 brand-spanking new 3-port timers, model 56082, as well as 2 brand-spanking new single port timers, model 62061Z to the tune of $290. Five brand-new timers in all. They arrived on the 25th and 26th of June, 2020. On the 27th, we put new batteries in, programmed them, attached them to the water faucets, connected the water hoses to each outlet and thought we were good to go.
The next morning, on the 28th, imagine our surprise to wake up and see 2 of the brand-spanking new 3-port timers had not shut off and would not respond to turning the timers off. We had to shut the water faucets off. The other 3-port timer looked like it hadn't watered from outlet 2, so we tried doing it manually, but it wouldn't respond to a manual command. We always water in the wee hours of the morning before the sun comes up. The watering is always finished before daylight. Anyway...
So, we took the timers off the faucets, took the battery packs out, allowed the memory to clear, reinstalled the batteries, reprogrammed them and reinstalled them. We ran tests through all the cycles, setting each outlet at 2 minute intervals. They worked. Then we cycled through all outlets to see if they would respond to manual control and all seemed well, giving us hope that they were going to function correctly.
The following morning, the 29th, we woke to the same problem on 2 of the 3-outlet timers. Not one to give up easily, I ran them [my husband had already given up] through multiple tests, removing and reinserting the batteries, reprogramming and testing ad nauseam. Finally, I gave up too and decided to send these two 3-outlet timers back. UPS is scheduled to pick them up today, the 30th of June, 2020.
These were brand-new and defective right out of the box. We are so disappointed in the compromised quality of these Orbit timers. At the first inkling that these things were defection, we should have re-boxed them all and sent them all back immediately. As of now, we're returning 2 of the 3-outlet timers. And we're going to be vigilantly aware of the performance of the ones we're keeping. If there's even a hint that one functions incorrectly, it's going back immediately.
What has happened to the integrity of companies that are mass producing defective products? It's just all about the bottom line -- $$$. And there are probably multitudes of buyers unaware of Orbits 6 year warranty and just end ups trashing them. Should not companies be accountable for their defective products? I think so.
We weren't aware that these timers have a 6 year warranty or exactly what that warranty covered. Perhaps companies like Orbit count on the ignorance of its customers. Orbit needs to be on top of all these negative comments. Now we're hesitant to order replacements and we do not, as of right now, recommend them to anyone.

Even for old people with no "programming skills" easy to adjust. Works very precise, long battery life, I love it.
