Even the replacement is defective! Buyer beware :(
After years of using Amazon for hundreds of orders, this is my very FIRST negative review:I was very excited at the prospect of buying this laptop. When the first one arrived on August 24, 2018, everything was great. I was very impressed with its sleek design and the speed of the processor itself. The screen looked great. I had no complaints! I allowed the battery to charge to 100% during initial setup.Once the battery was at 100%, I unplugged it and used it in another area of the house. After some use, the battery charge had logically gone down some (down to about 80%), and so I went back to my office to plug it in. The power icon on the bottom right corner task bar showed a little *plug* symbol, so I assumed that it was charging.A few hours of use later, I noticed that my battery was very low, around 10%. How was this possible if it had been plugged in the whole time?Upon hovering the cursor over the power icon, I got the following message: "PLUGGED IN, NOT CHARGING". No matter how many times I reinserted the charging adapter, I kept getting this message. I had no option but to shut down the computer, unplug it, plug it back in, and then reboot. Unfortunately, the cycle would repeat itself once the computer got to 100%. The rebooting was the only temporary solution that worked. I even tried reinstalling the drivers and doing a system restore, nothing would fix it. All the online forums say to remove the battery, but this does not have a removable battery, and is not an option for me. (See the attached picture for an example)I contacted ASUS and they could do nothing. They told me they would honor the warranty, so just to send it in, and that their turn around time was 7-10 business days after receiving the laptop. This was unacceptable since I need the laptop to work. I opted, instead, to have Amazon replace it for me.The second VivoBook arrived on September 7, 2018. I was so glad that the problem would finally be fixed. After the first complete charge, I decided to test the charging function. I streamed some video on battery to lower the charge, and then plugged it in. To my great dismay and disappointment, the power icon read the exact same message: "PLUGGED IN, NOT CHARGING".This was the SECOND VIVOBOOK IN A ROW!!!!!! Am I just unlucky, or was this a bad batch?! I've only found 2 other recent reviews of this product that had the same problem (go ahead and search for them in the reviews). Needless to say, I am sadly going to have to return this replacement and switch to another computer brand. It's too bad, because it seemed like an otherwise great laptop. I am so disappointed.

I have a Sony Vaio that is going on ten years old - purchased in February of 2009. It's a very good PC, and has been my constant travel companion. So, it's beat up. It's got a 320GB HDD, a bluray player which no longer works because the s/w theft software is obsolete, and the thing is literally falling apart. For $1600, I've definitely gotten my money's worth.

Why am I telling you all of this?

Because this ASUS thing is the bomb!

It's SO much faster, even with an I5 and not an I7. The storage space is insane, with one TB, and the SSD is 128GB. 8GB RAM!

I loaded almost ALL of my programs to the new ASUS. The one that impressed me most was Dragon Premium 13. It's night and day difference. The Sony worked, but it was slow. The ASUS is nearly seamless, with over 99% accuracy.

All my video editing software runs, and faster! Everything is faster! I am really amazed.

Last year I was repairing DELL's, and bought a cheapie refurb on EBay for just under $200. It's a basic working laptop. But, it is built like a tank. (Model E6510, 8GB I7, just swapped in a Silicon Power SSD, now it rocks, too!)

The Sony is also very capable for air travel and has been very resilient.

The ASUS...well, it's too early to tell, but since I have it ensconced to be a dt replacement, I am not really all that concerned.

I have a Razer Blackwidow Chroma hooked up to it, and the combination is just wonderful. I can type again!

(I am a published author, and the ability to write fast is a key component to success!)

The keyboard on the ASUS - meh. Hook up a real mechanical clicker and you can go to town...but, the Dragon software, coupled with a Logitech H800, provides an even sweeter setup!

I can do 5,000 words per HOUR with this rig.

All in all, very pleased with this new PC. I will update next year, once I've broken it in a bit.

NOTE: It does take about a week for Win 10 to settle down, but I am also on satellite internet. The downloads and updates took about the same time to download. BUT - install times were mere minutes.

For example, I installed the MS Office Pro Suite, 2016 version, and Vision and Project 2016 - all in under 45 minutes.

    AVS4You took about three minutes...

    Good stuff!!

Edited to clarify a few things... 1/11/2019.

UPDATE - I now use this PC and two others daily, with Input Director software. It allows me to use the Razer and my Logitech trackball on all three computers! Loving this setup! Very productive! I wrote three 55k word novels since October!

I ordered the version that comes with a 128 SSD hard drive pre-installed because I don't feel comfortable taking apart a laptop and installing things myself. So far I'm very happy with it.

Applications load very quickly, even the more hardware intensive programs. The already fast boot up time is even faster with the fingerprint sensor.

Windows 10 is pre-installed on the SSD which is awesome. That's also where I keep applications for fast launch times. I store all my media on the slower 1 TB hard drive and made a shortcut on the desktop for easy access.

I was happily surprised to find that DaVinci Resolve 15 runs great for video editing. My primary reason for getting this laptop was to be able to run video software. Exactly what I needed.

One annoying thing is that Asus doesn't have a way to use function lock. This means it takes two hands to turn the volume up or down because you have to press the Function key. To fix this, I downloaded SharpKeys 3.7 which easily edited the registry to allow f10 through f12 to adjust the volume with just one button.

No bloatware was pre-installed, but there was some minor Asus greyware that came with the initial update that was easy to dispose of.

This is a powerful laptop at an affordable price. Because of that, there will be some drawbacks. Battery life is fine, but not exceptional. You'll want to carry the charger around with you. The large screen and keyboard are decent, but nothing special. It's not heavy but not small either.

If you want a laptop that has enough power to get things done but can't afford the price of a MacBook Pro or Ultra Book, this might be the one you're looking for.

When I first bought this last year I was in DESPERATE need. As in, it takes 40 minutes for my laptop to turn on and then I can't actually do anything with it besides move files onto a flash drive, and also it's held together with packing tape desperate. Now, I was still a student at the time, and money was pretty tight, but I saved up and then splurged on this because the reviews were decent and I needed a laptop that was at least somewhat functional.

And it worked great! It turned on super fast (even before my old laptop started having serious issues, it still took a little longer to turn on), everything worked good, and the battery life was excellent! Occasionally there were little things that I wasn't wild about- like how sometimes I would delete a file or something and then there'd be a little ghost image of the delete button until I turned the screen off and on again- but they were minor and easy to fix.

More recently, however, more concerning problems have been happening. Every once in a while I'll plug my laptop charger back in, and it will tell me that it's plugged in but not charging. Which is never what you want to see. What usually happens is that I suck it up and wait it out, or sometime's I unplug it and replug it a few times, or again turn it off and on (which weirdly solves a lot of my laptop problems in world where that's usually not true anymore) and lo and behold suddenly it will tell me my battery's much higher than it was before since it was actually charging the whole time despite saying otherwise. So not great, but tolerable so long as I can actually determine that it's charging.

The real kicker is that during this past week my screen has just been blacking out for seemingly no reason. I'll change tabs and all of a sudden it goes dark. It's still on, and I can close the browser and the rest of the laptop seems fine. I was thinking maybe it was just an issue with chrome or something, but I regularly update chrome, and today I opened up a writing program and the same thing happened. I even tried opening up Word (which I don't pay for so I can't actually do anything on it besides read documents I've already made) and the same thing happened. Meanwhile, my browser worked fine. It was alarming because I've got a lot of files saved on that program and some of them aren't backed up anywhere else. Even turning it off and on again didn't work after multiple tries. Eventually I had to restart my whole laptop, and while it did succeed in opening up my program properly, it's hardly the most reassuring.

Long story short, I know I use my laptop A LOT and that it would probably only last me a few years before getting serious issues, but I was hoping that it would last longer than ONE year. I'll have to keep an eye on the screen issues, especially after reading so many reviews where the screen just stopped working all together. But up until now, it was a very nice buy.

UPDATE: the random blackouts did stop eventually. Don't know why. Anyway, it's about 4.5 years since I bought this thing. Worked pretty good while it lasted. Right click stop working for me a year or so ago, and I just got by using the keyboard stuff instead. Was still going fine until last week when I noticed it suddenly lagging a lot. "No big deal," I thought to myself. I can handle that. Well, today I can no longer handle it because now it will no longer let me log into the laptop AT ALL. It will not load the login screen. And now i'm kicking myself for not backing up my files online. I just thought I'd have a little more time than ONE WEEK, but boy, did it degrade fast! Time to get a new laptop I guess.

Looks sharp and boots quick! Nice to have an SSD for boot and ample storage for everything else. Battery seems to hold charge well, so far. Keep in mind that I am not using this for gaming or high demand applications. It is light and thin! But almost feels a little delicate. Minor grievance would be that the keyboard feels a little soft and no back lighting of keys. Very pleased overall.

This product has been amazing while it lasted. The quality was good and speed was up to expectations. The wife uses it for basic Facebook, YouTube and etc. Nothing intensive like gaming or Photoshop. Sadly beginning of this month she noticed the screen would shut off and she would have to hold the power button and then turn it back on for the screen to work again. Then last week, that method stopped working completely. Now we have a useless laptop that's a few months new. Longevity is pathetic. Need to get this warranty fixed now

The media could not be loaded.

    Recomendable 100%

So far what I’ve on this laptop is play subnautica, write, and watch youtube.
Performance on Subnautica was good, graphics weren’t on high but it handled the game well.
I’ve had no issues with this laptop at the moment. But it was affordable for me and performed better than my hand-me-down acer.
Nice and light, the chasi is strong. With my older laptop I feared it would snap in half if I picked it one handed. This one is easy to lift and gives me no worry about bending.
Battery life is also good. I haven’t timed the life to match with the claims but I’ve gone a few hours watching youtube.
