**Comments on coil whine**
Some suggested that it was coil whine, others suggested that it was the SSD. When I first took the laptop out of the box and set everything up, I absolutely could hear a subtle whine coming from the laptop (hard to describe the sound, but in a quite room, it was a tad annoying). It did concern me and I wasnt' sure if I wanted to keep the laptop. I decided to utlimately keep it for a week before making a decision.
I'm a heavy user of this device. I use it at work, on the train, and at home in the evening. I use it for office work and some light gaming (it works fine for many RTS's). I noticed that after about a week, I didn't hear the coil whine any longer. It seems to have gone away. I am not entirely sure why, or what the difference was, but perhaps a period of "burn-in" is what is needed. In any case, your mileage may vary, but I am absolutely keeping this laptop and I am very happy with my purchase!
First of all this laptop has great value for price which is tough to match for any other brand on the market. Most people mentioned this but I think it needs to be emphasized. I've had it for about a month and love the look and overall design. The weight is awesome as it's very light yet the aluminum material gives a very classy feel but not as much as the UX390 does with the gold colored details. The technical specs are great but SSD speed could be better, both UX390 and most Dell XPS versions have better speed which is the only area this laptop fails to meet my expectations. 8th generation i7 is running really smooth with no delays so far. The heat is not an issue as it doesn't seem to heat up and I love the speakers as I don't even need any exterior sound system around for a very good experience. It would be better if the same sound experience could be had in non-Windows environments but I'm guessing the drivers should be on the way.
Besides the SSD speed the only issue I've witnessed is the scratchy noise like most people mentioned. From my observation it seems to happen when the laptop isn't on a flat surface so some fan looks to be causing the issue.
Overall this is a great choice for anyone that doesn't care about the occasional scratchy noise and always on the go. Good connectivity and weight that stands out.
UPDATE (JUNE 2018):
I prefer Linux over Windows but stuck with the pre-installed Windows 10. After Ubuntu 18 came out I installed it about 2 weeks ago (May 2018) and haven't noticed the noise since. The original issue might simply be driver related in Windows but too early to tell. I'll be updating this information if I notice the noise again.
UPDATE (DECEMBER 2018):
I've been using the laptop with Ubuntu for months and never had the noise. I'm convinced the noise was a driver based thing. Also another friend purchased the same laptop and doesn't have the noise issue after a Windows update which he did right off the bat. Regarding the experience after a year this is still the best price for performance laptop I could have purchased. The SSD speed isn't as good as some others like XPS but other than that there are no issues. It has been almost a year and I used the laptop with a fan at home but when outside I don't have such an option but it still doesn't overheat. Also with TLP installed I get to enjoy about 6-8 hours of serious use without plugging it in which is a difference maker for me as I don't like carrying the plug with me at all times.
I'm really happy with the product, ASUS really knows how to create an attractive and useful computer.
Top reviews from other countries
So I had my previous laptop for about 8 years and recently I've gotten more into video editing and photo editing, so I could see the strain it put on my old laptop and it just couldn't keep up. So I went looking for an upgrade - I wanted at least 8GB ram, at least 256GB SSD, an i7 8th gen (very important), and I wanted a more compact form factor - a 14" was the biggest I wanted to go. On top of this I also wanted it light and portable, and be an overall stylish laptop. So did this ASUS Zenbook meet these requirements? Let's take a look:
1. Minimum 8GB RAM - Check!
This model came with 16GB RAM, more than I expected, but I'm not complaining! I'm not 100% sure if this is DDR3 or DDR4 - some branding says DDR4, some says DDR3... either way, it's really a bargain and was double what I wanted, so no complaints here.
2. Minimum 256GB SSD - Check!
Again, this model outdid my requirement - we have a 512GB SSD packed inside this monster and it is a lifesaver. When I edit video files, they usually range from 1-3GB, so having more hard drive space is a MUST. An SSD also speeds up your regular tasks like booting up, opening programs, etc. No complains here, I love the extra storage.
3. i7 8th Gen - Check!
There were models with an i7 7th gen, but I wanted the 8th gen because it is a true quad core - which makes processing much more efficient and quicker. I was not going to compromise on this - the processor is critical, and I'm happy to say that this has an 8th gen core i7 processor from intel and it's a beast!
4. Portable/Compact/Stylish/Under 14" - Check!
This honestly is a very tiny laptop and I love how they fit a 14" display on a 13.3" body - this makes the screen go almost edge to edge, and you don't have ugly bezels along the sides. It's also VERY light and is perfect for traveling or even working around the house with. Battery life is amazing, and I literally have no complains with the design and portability. Ideally I wanted the Royal Blue colour, but that is impossible to find in Canada at a reasonable price (you're looking at a minimum $1600 for that), and it wasn't worth paying a premium just for colour - I'm looking for a skin to apply to this cover to give it a personal touch :)
Okay so now that was the good stuff, what are the negatives? There's 3 main drawbacks IMO.
1. The fingerprint sensor is good, but not great. It works I'd say 75% of the time on the first try - sometimes requires 2 or 3 tires, and sometimes just doesn't work and I have to input my PIN. Not a big deal, but something to make note of. That being said, this thing boots from sleep INSTANTLY. Literally, you open up the laptop and it's ready to login right away.
2. The Wifi issue. So I have noticed that sometimes when I boot from sleep, it takes a bit of time to connect to wifi. Once im connect, it's fine, but sometimes the adapter is just off - and I have to disable and reenable the wifi option to get it to connect to my wifi network. A bit of an annoyance, and it happens more often than not. That being said, this is again a minor issue that only affects you when you turn it on after a few hours of sleep.
3. The biggest, and most annoying issue - a constantly clicking sound. This is by far the biggest issue on this laptop. Honestly, I haven't opened it up to see if it is the hard drive, processor, fan, etc. that's causing this clicking sound, but in a quiet room, this is VERY obvious. This is also obvious if you do voice recordings - even with a good quality microphone (I've tried it with the Blue Yeti), it still picks up this clicking sound and then you have to go into an audio editing software to remove that noise. It can get VERY annoying, and is a big con that I saw a lot of people mention before I purchased this. If you use headphones, this will never both you. But if you work in a quiet environment, it's obvious. The fan also goes a bit wild sometimes, but I got this application called NoteBook FanControl - and it seems to keep this fan in check and prevents it from unnecessarily turning to max speed. I don't mind this as much because sometimes when video editing it does need the fan to go off, because it is hard on the processor - which makes sense - but when I'm just browsing Amazon - I don't need the fan to be spinning at max speed - that's just not necessary.
Okay so overall - would I recommend this laptop? Honestly - YES. Without a doubt. The cons are minor, with the noise being the biggest issue. The specs on this beast are outstanding, and I won't need to upgrade probably for another 8 or 10 years. It's portable, stylish, and powerful - exactly what I wanted and is honestly the best bang for your buck for these specs at this price point.
Performance is pretty decent.
Screen quality is nice, very few reflections of light.
Fingerprint works very well !
The nicest thing I like of this laptop is that it's very light and thin.
Cons :
- I can still hear the coil whine after 6 months of use, but I think it's really far from annoying. You only hear it in very silent rooms and it's barely noticeable. I've often heard this kind of noise from computers in general. It sounds like a hard drive noise (I know it's not that, but it sounds like that).
- The touch pad is great except for the fact that if you don't press well on the right click, it might do a left click instead. It's not cool if you play Minesweeper, cause that means you click on a bomb instead of flagging it :(
Overall : WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND !
