This is the first Monster Hunter game I've played since Freedom Unite on the PSP, I gotta say this game really stomps that version. It's a lot easier to move around- in a good way. You climb much faster up ivy & small cliffs, you're not scrambling to get up anymore, the character will hop up quickly. Overall you feel less clunky without removing that Monster Hunter feel.
The game is more easily accessed in single player too as they made a single player mode for you to go through that is entirely separate from the multiplayer. The story isn't anything to note, however the events that happen are really crazy, fighting a monster on a sand boat? That's pretty awesome.
The weapon variety seems unchanged but instead refined to work better. Combat feels more fast and the areas more large and interesting. Monster fights are crazy and exciting, now you can jump on their backs in an attempt to knock them over for your party to get a few free seconds of uninterrupted attacks or to heal up and sharpen your weapons.
The game has a nice difficulty curve as well, it does spike here and there but it doesn't feel like previous games where you'd start a mission and get murdered on your first few hunts as a noob. They really help you get the game via singleplayer thankfully, helping you get the grips of the simple, and advanced combat mechanics. The difficulty progression in both single & multiplayer is far better done in this than in the other ones I have played.
Worth getting, especially if you have a fancy new 3DS to play with.
The part that I really have enjoyed so far is the expanse of information that goes into this game. You can definitely play through it without ever looking things up and just hacking away at things, but I really like the weapon designs so of course I look up which weapons not only look the best, but perform as well. The weapon trees expand so far that it's hard to just pick which one you want to use in the end. That, and there are so many weapon types, each with their own nuances.
I'm not too far into the game yet, so I don't know how much more on the content I can review. I will say I find the dialogue a little boring, and it doesn't help that the voices are in some kind of gibberish rather than any known language. Is this something that is consistent in all the MH games? I also turn the volume off when I'm buying stuff from the shops. You can only listen to a shopkeep saying "Hi!" (or "Hrii!") every couple seconds for so long. Sometimes the random Palico meowing or the strained breathing from sprinting annoys me, too, but that's why I play with my own music on. Not taking a star off because I feel like all the sound-related stuff might just be me.
Anyway, fun game, good amount of difficulty, easy to learn.
