This WD 2 TB Portable Hard Drive is JUST what I wanted... which is more than I expected... It provides a LOT of space for the price. It is Quick and Quiet, Compact and Convenient. It keeps cool even with large file transfers (unlike another brand I have been using). USB 3 has really moved external drives to a new level of performance and convenience. This drive also has 256-bit hardware-based data encryption and a three-year limited warranty.

3.0 USB allows fast backups. I spent only a few hours backing up over 1TB of data. Times are NOT accurate, as the device will keep going up and down on how long the transition will take; it usually takes a shorter time than listed. Was also able to move STEAM completely without re-downloading anything. Worked great and was very smooth. The device can handle opening Steam daily and having games played from it without any pause or error. Also, while using the device I could still browse online and do other things on my computer without issue. (Just don't use something it's trying to copy while it's copying.) All-in-all this device is so quiet you wouldn't think it was on. It's small and can be traveled with easily, but the outside would need a cover of some sort during. It's hard but you can tell by pressing on it with your hand that it might need some padding just in case of something occurring during travel. Fantastic buy with plenty of data and fast usage. Highly recommended! (Also, been using WD external hard drives for years and have had no issue with any of them. In fact, I have a 1TB WD Elements that has endured daily usage for over 4 years with no trouble.)Read full review

Super quiet and fast. The first time I plugged it in, I had to double check if it mounted because it was so quiet... couldn't hear it. Also, normal file transfers are really fast, and single large-file copies are ridiculous fast. Perhaps it's because the drives that I'm used to are all usb 2, but the transfer speed was amazing. Add in the fact that I paid ~$75, and I couldn't really ask for much better.

These are great drives, but if they are GTP partition protected they will not work on Windows XP or Linux Mint ( probably all Linux distros ). XP won't assign a drive letter. Linux Mint would recognize the drive but after copying files to it, I was not able to access them: Error (Content not accessible). GTP protection is designed to work on Windows Vista and above. If you have XP or Linux and it doesn't work do this: GOOGLE==Fix GTP partition problem. eBay software won't let me put in a URL. This will show you how to clean, initialize, partition and format the drive to NTFS. This fixed the XP problem. I haven't used it on Linux yet.

Quiet, 2gb storage, fast USB 3.0, plug and play right out of the box make this a must have for my local backup needs. I am not of the 'cloud' generation so I need the old school solution where I'm in charge of my own backup locally. The cable is kind of short, about 18", but not a problem for my application. The unit is obviously double stacked discs since it is noticeably thicker than my WD 1gb "My Passport" drive. The two are almost identical, except for the thickness as mentioned. For reliable, weekly, quick backup storage, you can't go wrong.
