I'm an audio engineer so I spend an awful lot of time working with audio equipment and speakers. I know what sounds good, how things are supposed to sound, and the general public likes to hear things. I was looking for the right water-resistant Bluetooth speaker for a low price and with a name like Cambridge Soundworks I figured I'd dive in as I've heard good things but never personally used one of their products.
Build & Interface
It's a beautiful speaker. One caveat I have about it is that the left and right drivers are really only on one of the two sides, which is fine, that's really all you need. If I was nitpicking I'd say the OontZ logo at the left (or when standing upright) top of the speaker distracts from the speaker's beautiful shape and design (personally I don't see a name like OontZ sticking) because it simply doesn't serve any purpose other than to be an extruded logo. Perhaps if the "O" was used as a power button in future models, it would make more sense. I plan to use this speaker pretty much everywhere, as it's fairly sturdy, lightweight but with enough heft that it feels like a good speaker. I'm very surprised I was able to pick this up for $25, but would gladly purchase it again for $35 at it's original price.
Sound Quality
I can't tell you how incredible sounding this speaker is for it's low price, you really have to hear it for yourself, but I'll try to describe it as best I can. The speaker creates full, rich sounds regardless of standing upright, so long as the speaker is facing you, or is facing an open space, you'll hear it. The bass is incredibly punchy, though the low end leaves a little to be desired at high volumes (and I'll talk about that below) it's a fantastic all around speaker. It's LOUD, definitely designed for entertainment, and whether you're watching TV or listening to music it sounds great. I could see myself using this speaker at a pool party, on the beach, as I already use it in the shower and take it with me while walking around my house.
I've listened to various genres of music to push thing's limits and it's almost completely delivered. Classical music is concise, classic rock isn't just soulful it's clear, and it handles rap and pop music's bass-heavy tunes very well. I do have to say though, if you bass-heavy music with a lot of low frequency variation you're going to be upset. I say this because if you turn the speaker to it's highest volume, the speaker's punchy bass drowns lower bass sounds out, so instead of getting those deep hums, they'll probably be drowned out by the loudness of the bass, as the speaker is designed to create lots of impact sounds so you can really "feel" the bass. If you're into electronic musicians like Flume with a lot of heavy bass variation, you'll need to pick up a really expensive speaker, and that's not this. BUT, that's not what this speaker is and you will struggle to find a Bluetooth speaker even in the one to two hundred dollar range that can correctly play those kind of complex bass variations--to add to that, this one is also waterproof and small so there's not much to complain about.
Overall
For the quality of the audio, this speaker delivers an amazing sound quality at an incredibly reasonable price. I've used a lot of Bluetooth speakers in this price range like the DKnight and some other generics, I've also spent some time with the JBL Flip 2 and the Bose Soundlink--this thing is far superior for both it's function and it's value. The battery life of this speaker is incredible as well. The fact that this speaker exists in this low of a price range makes incredibly happy, it makes it easy to replace, and allows me to try other speakers, to compare even, but as far as low priced speakers go this thing should be killing the competition if it isn't already because it's my go-to mobile speaker. It feels good, it sounds good, and its battery life is fantastic. I’ll update this review periodically to see how it stands up to the test of time but wow, this was an awesome buy.
Original review:
After reading the rave review for the previous, "smaller" Angle at iLoungedotcom, I simply had to have this extra speaker (in addition to the "sliced bread" to which it was compared). It's far from my best speaker, but it could easily see the most use. When it's time to hit the treadmill, I can take this mere handful with me along with an early (2010) iPod Touch with Bluetooth that's instantly seen and paired with.. And the second time I used the Angle with the same iPod, there was no need to go into "Settings" to "re-pair" it. Just press on the Angle's On/Off button, select a playlist, and the speaker instantly and wirelessly.
There's nothing "miraculous" about audio from the speaker: it doesn't have as full and rich a sound as slightly bigger speakers costing from $50 to $200 (I did some A and B comparisons, which included 3 JBL speakers, the Harman Kardon Soundsticks and the Amazon Echo (I intend to compare it with some Tivoli speakers that, despite their small size, strike me as exceptionally "bass-friendly" (but at 6X the price of the Angle Plus.) The Angle Plus has a bright and sparkling sound that's alive, detailed and faithfully "present." Moreover, there's just enough bass to satisfy listeners who have become aware of the limitations of "novelty" bluetooth speakers in the $10 to $20 range.
I may soon come to love this handy, practical, responsive speaker, but there are a few minor annoyances:
1. No micro-SD card slot. Admittedly, this feature is missing on most speakers. But it's widely present on the ten-dollar mini-Bluetooth "boom-boxes" that, notwithstanding their small sound-stages, are surprisingly full-featured and functional (with the exception of the widely advertised "radios," which are useless in the West). Some may question the value of a micro-SD (TF) card. It's value is simply that it transforms the speaker into a self-sustaining music player, capable of playing thousands of MP3 files without benefit of an iPod, iPhone, wi-fi connection, or music streamed from some "cloud." The speaker by itself is sufficient.
2. The controls aren't clearly marked on the activating strip on the apex of the Angle Plus. On/Off, Bluetooth, Volume, Pause and Play are "black on black" and visible only upon close inspection. Soon you'll get used to them and, by relying on tactile evidence, find operation of your Angle Plus non-problematic if not automatic. Nevertheless, I'm someone who, especially when switching a device to OFF or ON, prefers the feel and reassuring click of hard plastic or metal. By contrast, the Angle Plus, like the JBL Pulse, requires the user to "feel around" in spongy rubber.
3. An additional rubbery pad is included, we're told, as an "option" for steadying the speaker during loud bass passages. Frankly, I've been unable to make the speaker vibrate or move (my cats would pounce on it instantly). But even if the pad's practical usefulness is questionable, there may be a psychological component that justifies its inclusion. The presence or absence of certain tones and frequencies depends, to a great extent, upon the listener's consciousness of them "going in." In other words, the rubber mat ensures that each time I use the speaker, I'll be all the more attentive to the playing of Ray Brown, Oscar Pettiford, Paul Chambers, Charles Mingus, Wilbur Ware, Scott LaFaro, Jaco Pastorius--and when I hear them, I'll know that my Oontz Angle Plus was up (or, more appropriately, "down") to the challenge of capturing the sound of each vital, seminal bassist.
There's one positive that easily compensates for such minor annoyances: the battery life is 3 to 8 times longer than any of my other rechargeable devices (including 4 iPods). It's a pleasure to simply pick up this speaker every day for 2 weeks or longer without having to think about charging cables, wall chargers. external charging batteries, the "right" adapters. Charge it once--and it may play for a month before requiring recharging.
In sum, if you're looking for a speaker with smooth, rich and amply spacious sound, the Oontz Angle Plus is NOT your speaker. If you'd be happy with a speaker that's bright, detailed and focused, then the Angle Plus definitely IS the one--the best sounding speaker I've heard for under $50. Moreover, if you believe the best speaker is necessarily the one you have with you and that can be counted upon to play, again and again, with little to no fuss, this performer emerges as the unchallenged champ..
Comparisons can be unflattering and time-wasting. Rather than compare this speaker with bigger and more expensive speakers, give it an opportunity to impress you on its own terms. And if you've owned bigger and pricier speakers, think of the times you've fussed over adapters, cables, speaker placement and, last but not least, dicey Bluetooth connections (I feel like I've wasted hours running a dating service in which the carefully-selected, "perfect" companions never seem to get together--and, unlike Neil Clark Warren, I don't stand to make a dime.)
