Great Power Strip Liberators & Depends on Which Style You Need
It is really rare that I have normal sized plugs anymore, and cover up way more than just its outlet. To make full use of any power strip (or wall outlet), or even just to keep a clean look, short extension cords are the key. These Etekcity ones appear to be good quality, sufficient gauge for most applications (more on that later), and are exactly what they claim to be. For straight-connection plug applications, it extends straight out a foot. I got a new WiFi router to add to my setup, and all my slots were taken. I ended up making it work with some really crafty puzzle solving and use of two kinds of adapters on top of each other as pictured. You really don't want to connect multiple adapters together. Plus it is uglier, and big plugs get bumped and loosened by the vacuum. So I bought these to tidy that up, tuck the plugs behind my dresser, and it looks cleaner and is safer from bumps by the vacuum. I've used this kind of thing, of many different styles all over my house.GAUGEPersonally I prefer 14 AWG (thicker copper wire) in an extension cord and power strip to match the actual gauge of the house wiring that will be 14 AWG for most normal circuits in the wall. A typical home circuit is likely to support 15A and 1500W. Usually that is from using a few high powered things at the same time. So in a single extension cord you are unlikely to use the entire circuit capacity in one application. This is why 16 AWG is typical in power strips and extension cords, and why I've accepted it in the Etekcity version. This one is UL tagged for 13A, more than any of my actual applications, except for my electric hot water kettle in the kitchen. I bet you if you weren't paying attention, your power strip likely has a 16 AWG cable of its own to the wall, so extensions from there will be no better. Drawing more power than rated from a thinner cable will cause more resistance in the wire, causing heat, and risk of fire or cable failure. That is why I usually just like to match my home circuit. For an air-conditioner I actually bought a 12 AWG extension cord to play it safe. I actually bought some Ziotek brand ones in the past that were 14 AWG. But this time I was satisfied to go with Etekcity's 16 AWG version.STYLEThe actual plug end for these kind of thing usually come in different styles. Some are wall-hugging right angle and very flat so it can go behind a dresser pressed up against the wall instead of sticking out perpendicular to the wall. Some are right-angle connector that hang to the side off the power strip instead of perpendicular like these. Some of these even have pass-through plugs on the back where you can plug more on top or stack them. But sometimes you actually do want the straight plugs like these, which was the perfect application for what I was doing with them. All this is just preference and what orientation of plug will work best for what you want to do. Of course you can get different lengths too. For power-strip liberating purposes, 1 foot has always been great to me, and doesn't get in the way itself.DRAWBACK?One thing all of these kind of extensions have on them for compliance reasons is that huge white tag that says "do not remove". Now those tags do get in the way themselves. I expect that they do not intend for you to use your cable snips to cut the zip tie that holds it on.
