The Kinivo BTC450 looks very similar to the Belkin but is literally half the price. I figured for $39.99 I could take a chance and see if it worked, and if it didn't, it would be a lot easier to swallow than the $80 Belkin.
I have to tell you this is a great device. I have had no issues with it and works great. Since there are really no settings for this, everything has to be done through your phone, which in my case is an iPhone 4S. To use it, you need to plug the power adapter into the 12-volt socket and the aux cord into the aux input. In my case, they are in my center console under the armrest. Then you mount the device somewhere you have a nice flat surface, which in my case is on the panel near the gearshift. Now, turn on your car's power and pair it with your phone. It's easier to pair than any other device I've used. To use it, you need to select the auxiliary input on your stereo.
This device can be used for two things. First and foremost, it allows you to make handsfree calls. I've yet to actually make a call while driving, but I've received several calls and all you need to do is push the big button to answer and again to hang up. If you're listening to the radio or a CD, you'll first need to change the stereo's input to Auxilary so you can use it (if you don't the other person will be able to hear you as the microphone is built into the device, but you won't be able to hear them).
The second use is that it allows you to stream music wirelessly to this device. For years I've been plugging my phone (and before that, my MP3 player) into the aux jack using a 2 or 3-foot cord. Now I don't need to do that anymore. Less wear and tear on your headphone jack and you no longer need to use the phone's controls to change tracks. Instead, there are two buttons on the top of this device that allows you to skip to the next or previous track. Need to pause the song? Push the big button. If no music is playing and you push the button, it will start playing. The sound quality is indistinguishable from a wired connection. I recall in the past people had to use a wireless FM transmitter to play music from a portal CD player to a car stereo. I had trepidation at first regarding this device because of that past experience as those never worked well and this is light years beyond that technology.
What's really nice is that if you are listing to music and someone calls you, it will pause the music player, allow you to talk, and when you are done, it unpauses the music where it left off. Another great thing is that this unpairs from your phone when you turn off the car and re-pairs when you start it back up. You don't need to manually do this which is nice and you shouldn't have an issue when you leave your car and the Bluetooth is still activated.
Just a few caveats...first time I received a call with this unit, the ringer, which plays though your car speakers, blew me away. It was way too loud. I had to turn down the ringer volume on my phone. If you use your stereo's volume knob, then you'll have a hard time hearing to the person you're talking to, therefore you will need to find a happy medium. Also, I had to turn up the volume on the music player (which I believe has no effect on your battery unlike a wired connection) because when you skip tracks you hear a loud beep confirming the button press. If you don't adjust the volume on your phone, the beeps will be extremely loud and annoying. Luckily, I was able to find the correct volume levels. Also, if you turn up the volume on your phone, you won't need to turn the volume up so high on your car's stereo. When I first started using this device I heard a buzzing sound coming from my speakers. I saw that Amazon was selling a ground loop isolator that would supposedly fix this, but it turned out my car's stereo was turned up too high so adjusting the volume on the car and the phone took care of this problem.
I should also note that the 12-volt adapter has a USB input so you can charge your phone using a separate charging cable. This is a nice feature. It also comes with an extension cable for the aux wire if needed.
The wires coming out of this unit are very thin and I assume delicate. Since my unit is mounted near the gearshift in the center console and the cord runs along the top of the center console, I ran a risk of catching it on something and I am sure a good yank would damage it. So what I did was got a wire wrap from Home Depot, wrapped it around the cable, and then pushed it in the gap between the bottom of the center console and the floor. This way, very little of the wire is exposed and therefore it should be very safe from damage.
While not as nice or convenient than having Bluetooth built into your car, this is the best option I've seen and kills two birds with one stone -- I can use it for calls as well as listing to music and I don't need to worry about plugging anything in each time I enter the car. Definitely recommended!
I had the following requirements:
1. Has to turn ON when the car turns on and ALWAYS REMAIN ON regardless of the activity/inactivity of the phone (i.e. it should NOT fall asleep after 20 minutes of inactivity then requires re-connecting).
2. Will turn OFF when the car turns off.
3. Will automatically find my phone and connect when I start the engine. No fiddling of any kind should be required.
4. Will have enough bandwidth/speed to stream high quality audio.
5. Will have a microphone and will also function as a hands free phone kit.
6. Will look nice (not cheap) and can be mounted easily
After scrutinizing a ton of different Bluetooth receivers/kits, I purchased the BTC450. It pretty much meets every one of my requirements. Some important findings:
1. The device does indeed turn on when the car starts and remains ON. So far, it hasn't fallen asleep during periods of inactivity. Absolutely perfect. (I still need to field test this more to see if this holds true for longer periods of inactivity.)
2. The device does indeed turn OFF when the car turns off. Again, perfect. The device being ON or OFF is directly linked to if its currently receiving power from the car. This is BY DESIGN and I purposefully chose this product because it wasn't battery-powered.
ON/OFF behavior was a big dealbreaker for all the battery-powered Bluetooth adapters/receivers I looked at, as they would all go to sleep during inactivity (which then requires manual re-connecting). I should emphasize that you should test how your car's electrical system works before buying this product. As my car cuts off power to the power socket once you remove the key, I could leave this plugged in all the time and not worry about battery drainage at all. Some cars do have an "always-on" power socket for some reason, so please do your research first before complaining this product "silently drains your battery".
3. As long as my phone already has Bluetooth enabled, turning on my car will turn the BTC450 on and automatically find and connect with my phone. Perfect yet again. If you turn on the car and your phone does NOT have Bluetooth turned on, it will not connect (obviously). If you then turn Bluetooth on your phone (with the car already on), it won't connect automatically (needs further testing). Luckily the re-connection process is easy (just hit the big middle button on the BTC450). This behavior isn't ideal but is by far the best so far i've seen for Bluetooth car kits. I can live with either having Bluetooth always enabled on my phone (it has a negligible effect on my phones battery life) or remembering to turn it on.
4. I had some reservations about Bluetooth 2.1+EDR having enough speed/bandwidth to stream quality audio, and it was a huge relief to find that all my music and phone calls sound great. I believe that most of the audio quality problems reported are not related to this device, but are problems with your car itself. Most commonly reported issues are hearing a high pitched whine/humming/hiss that would be present regardless of what you plug in. This isn't the BTC450's fault and is likely an issue with how your car's stereo system is grounded. You can remove this noise by searching for "ground loop isolator" on Amazon, but a well known side effect of those products is a reduction in volume and sound quality. I do experience some audio whine at near max volume (especially when I hit the accelerator/gas pedal), but this is always present regardless of what is plugged in (phone, laptop, tablet, BTC450, etc). Since I never listen to anything even near max volume, this is a non-issue for me. Sound strength/loudness is the same as if I have my phone directly plugged in (make sure your phone's Bluetooth volume is set to max/high if you have problems).
5. Microphone works well enough. Though the microphone picks up a decent amount of ambient noise, the person on the other end of the call can hear me fine. Picking up a call or hanging up is super easy, just hit the big middle button. If you have a Bluetooth profile set up to use the BTC450 for phone calls, there will be a little chime/song that plays through the car speakers (NOT your phone's ringtone) if your stereo is set to the AUX input setting. When listening to the regular radio or CD, the stereo will NOT automatically switch to AUX when a phone call comes in (obviously, unless your stereo has that capability for some reason). Your phone will still play its ringtone through its own phone speakers simultaneously, as long as its not set to vibrate or silent. I think if you only have the Bluetooth media profile enabled (with the Phone Call profile DISABLED), the normal ringtone will play through the speakers but you will have to talk into your phone's microphone once you pick up (still need to test this).
6. Unit is fairly small, blends in with my car decor, and is pretty minimalistic.
Special note: There seems to be some bugs with the pairing not working quite correctly when using Google Navigation and Spotify. I've only run across this once so far and haven't been able to replicate it since. I'll update if I ever find out what causes this issue.

COMMANDE VOCALE (Google Now) :
Operation: This was one such unit where i have not read the manual and went ahead by pairing the phone by switching on the bluetooth. Remember to power on the car such that 12V cigarette lighter gets the power which turns on the multifunctional switch. The unit will be displayed as new device into your phone and then just click it. The unit will get paired and you will hear click sound. So simple.
In order to test the unit, now call your paired phone from another phone. The phone will start ringing and you will also hear a beep sound from multifunctional switch. Now click the multifunctional switch by pressing it, the call will get connected. The caller voice can be heard through the car speaker (wow effect) yes !! Car speaker (i said). As you speak to the caller, your voice will be picked by the microphone situated at the multifunctional switch and to the caller it would be really difficult to identify that you were speaking using bluetooth handsfree, the call quality is so clear and mic is so good.
I tested the mic sensitivity where in multifunctional switch was installed near my VW Polo cigarette lighter so that it stays hidden from everyone eyes but should work and to my surprise it work perfectly like charm. My voice was picked while i was sitting on driving seat and it was also picked perfectly from the back seat (as if i was on driver seat) No distortion or echo was heard at the caller end.
I tested this myself by acting as caller and asking my friend to sit in the car driver seat and rear seat. Conclusion: The unit microphone is so sensitive and clear that you can place it anywhere (i would say hide it anywhere) and still your voice will be picked as if you are talking on the phone.
Tested the music stream function and it worked great as well.
Overall: Very much satisfied with the unit. My sole purpose to gets handsfree and hear caller voice from my car speaker got solved. Also i was able to keep the multifunctional switch near the cigarette lighter such that it stays in my reach and remains somewhat hidden :) Works great ...definitely recommended to everyone.
