The Issue: Homelessness in Los Angeles County According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, 51,340 individuals experienced homelessness in Los Angeles County in 2011. Of these individuals, more than 9,000 are veterans, and 12,500 experience chronic homelessness. The San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Center, Inc.'s Cornerstone program serves as the first point of contact for adults aged 26–59 who have a serious mental illness and are experiencing homelessness. When new clients arrive at the Center, many are in a fragile state of health due to months—if not years—of malnutrition and poor hygiene.
