I have seen a couple of times, here and there, on these boards where people will bump heads and get into the " I' m smarter than you are" bouts. So far I have seen people handle themselves pretty darn well here over the whole thing, much better than elsewhere. Also, the people who chime in are quite often an outside voice of reason or mediation. What kind of gets my attention is *how* people go about trying to prove they are *smarter* than the other person. In one instance a couple of people were discussing a complex mathematical equation and had to make mention of when they completed their graduate school aka education level. So, what gets to me is the reasoning behind the apparent perception that the ability to perform complex mathematical equations is perhaps somehow a measure of a persons overall intelligence. Following that same line, one would also wonder how exaclty a persons educational level relates to their intelligence. There have been many studies that have concluded a good number of students at even highly touted universities drink and party their way to their degrees and their instructors just pass them along. Also, it should be noted that not eveyone is gifted with the economic resources to attend college, are of an ethinic origin that allows their SAT scores to get them in (making reference here to the expose that reported that in order to increase " diversity" certain ethinc origins were admitted with sub-standard scores while other races were excluded with above average scores for the same ethnic reasons), and there are of course those who do not even value a " higher education" at all as it takes up the time they would be using to persue their passion in life. It also does not take into account those people who have an aptitude for certain complex skills that are often equated with having great intelligence that simply give up on them because of social or situational pressures. For example, me (not claiming an abundance or lack of intelligence here). Early in my schooling I excelled at everything, in fact I was ahead of EVERYONE else. However, my ability in mathematics made waves when I drew a pathetic little bit of attention to myself. We are talking early, early basics here... The social waves and instructor were enough to forever alter my perception of mathematics and their value to me, and I devoted all of my sholastic attention to language which didn' t and doesn' t make waves until I want it to So, to make a long topic longer, I am just looking to hear what people think makes a person smart or in their eyes equates intelligence. Which I am hoping, after looking over this post, doesn' t involve typing/punctuation/spelling skills... Also, to all the math wizzes... do you find that you have an easier time with spelling over writing and over the people you know who write well? I seems to me over the course of the years that I see a lot of people who write well can' t spell that great, and the math people I know who can' t write a coherant sentence can spell words they have no clue as to what the words mean... Personally I see people like Bruce Lee, Bill Gates, Tiger Woods, and everyone else who takes their job/art/industry/skill/talent/etc to a higher level as a genius... Thanks!

I see it in two different ways. The first is intelligence, or " smarts" . That' s the ability with which one is born, and may or may not put it to good use during a lifetime. Education helps to develop this, of course, but it' s not all a factor of one' s schooling. The other is wisdom, which comes from life experience. " Knowing" when not to bid on an auction item because it looks like a scam, etc. My father, for instance, wasn' t the most intelligent person on this earth, but he had a couple bushels full of wisdom, and I wish I' d only listened a little closer during my formative years. If I had, perhaps I wouldn' t have had to make so many mistakes to learn the lessons myself. Growing up, I knew another person, my age, who was extremely intelligent. A math whiz, etc., extraordinaire. But Tim just didn' t have any common sense at all.
