Bob -> Klipsch Promedia 5-piece THX Speaker System for $172 shipped at Overstock.com (3/11/2003 1:41:26 PM)

Lowest price I' ve seen on this speaker set. It' s $215 at NewEgg and $190 at eCost and Amazon and freight on this has to be $15-$20 as it weighs 40 pounds. If you' re into gaming or watching videos on your PC, this set is awesome, the only thing that sucks is that with 400 watts, you' re bound to really tick off your neighbors when you crank it up.

I agree $169.99 is a great price for these speakers.

But I read this at overstock.com :

" What will I be charged for shipping?

We charge a flat rate of $2.95 for ground shipping to all mailing addresses within the continental United States, regardless of the quantity of products included in your transaction.

There is a $50 handling fee on all oversized items. These items are clearly marked on the product pages and during the checkout process."

I have to wonder if this is considered to be an oversized item. It' s not " clearly marked" as an oversized item on the web page for the speakers so the shipping looks as if it might be only $2.95.

I have to wonder if Klipsch has discontinued these speakers or lowered the price since Circuit City has them available for $189.99 in-store and on their website. Neither CompUKE or Best(?) Buy has the 4.1' s on their websites so Klipsch may have discontinued them.

Note: Went to www.klipsch.com and clicked on " Buy Now" for the 4.1' s and it links to " Product not found." Hmmm......website error or item discontinued?

I ordered a 21" monitor from them last month that weighed nearly 100 lbs but the oversized fee didn' t apply. I think it only applies to " big" items like furniture etc.

These probably are discontinued. Most products that Overstock has are end of life or discontinued products. CrapUSA and BeastBuy carry Klipsch and they have the low end 2.1 set with half the speakers and half the power output for $180.

I think Klipsch has stopped selling products directly from their website with the exception of refurbished items. Looks like they try to steer you to their dealer locator.

http://www.3dsoundsurge.com/reviews/klipsch/pmv2-400.html

According to the above review, Klipsh has officially stopped production of the original v.2-400 and has shifted to an updated 4.1 system that uses the updated crossover network found in their new 2.1 system and the new CP-1 pre-amp they are selling seperately to v.2-400 users for $50 along with a new price of $300. The new crossover network offers significantly better midrange, the major flaw of the original v.2-400 system.

johnrweb - Thanks for the link to the review. It' s awesome to see that the Klipsch speakers are 4-5 times louder than the Cambridge Soundworks digital system that he used as a reference. (3db equals a perceived doubling of volume). There' s also pretty good info on THX. I didn' t realize that these speakers were the first computer multimedia speakers to receive the THX certification. The reviewer gave the system a 99.5 out of 100 score even with the slight midrange deficiency and an original price of $250.

I do believe the term oversize is for the overall dimensions of the box.
When shipping via UPS they usually want to know the dimentions of the box you are shipping when looking for a rate, my guess is that Fed-Ex does the same

Thanks for all the information.

At $2.95 shipping this IS an excellent deal for new speakers IMO.

Refurbished 4.1' s from Klipsch are $149.99 + $21.85 shipping to where I live. Personally I' d rather have the new ones unless the refurbished were a much better deal.
