cooly-o -> Lkg 4 deal: cellphone to computer " Mobile Office Kit" : " for free" dialup access (3/5/2003 8:12:48 PM)

Any deals on those usb kits to connect your cell phone to your laptop? This kits allow you to call your dialup ISP number and your laptop will have wireless internet access wherever your cell phone can go. Granted its only 14.4 Kbps but that' s fine enough for wireless browsing on the go.

My cable ISP (RoadRunner) gives about 10 hours/month free (any free ISP dialups still out there??? Juno????). And I basically have free cellphone airtime on nights and weekends. The software (drivers) for the kit can most likely be downloaded from your cellphone provider' s website.

Here' s a similar product to what I' m looking for but it' s for the Thera Pocket PC Phone or your Maestro Pocket PC:

A little bit more complicated than that...

I worked for verizon and unless you have the Express network plan, if you try to use your cell phone to call in a dial up service, its HELLA slow... Hell the express network on its own is only slightly faster than a regular 56k dial up

Come on guys, anyone else interested in this? For us laptop owners (who scored great deals on their laptops with the help of this forum...) this would be a small fee (around $30 one time fee for the cable) and we have wireless internet access!!!!!

This would be way cool. So what if it takes a bit to load the page as you' re driving around with the wife. You could:

-Check the Deals forum
-go to mapquest.com for directions
-switchboard.com for phone numbers
-access your ftp server for a file on your computer
-maybe actually access your home computer (via remote access software such as pcAnywhere).
-recycler.com to find whatever you want and make some phone calls

I' m house shopping and it would be great to utilize this feature.

Isn' t it crazy not to utilize this capability if you own a laptop and a newer cellphone???

P.S. for you non-dialup folks. Juno.com give 10 free hrs a month and most high speed ISPs give about the same amount of hours for dialup access (for away from home conviences).

I' m confused, are you trying to sell this? Or are you informing us about it?

Well considering I haven' t found or verified a cable for my particular cell phone.....you figure it out.

And the fact that I' m just getting silly or no feedback from this website just surprised me.

Sounds like you are trying to sell something to me.

At: www.audiovox.com > Wireless > Wireless Phone Accessories > Data Accessories or:

http://www.audiovox.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/product_mainpage.d2w/input?prrfnbr=1548127

they have alot of cables and Mobile Kits. Their kit for my CDM-8300 cellphone (also works for the CDM-8500) is the MOK8300. I called audiovox tech support (1-800-229-1235, 1, 2, 1; until 5pm eastern) and they said the cable part number is DIC8300. But if you call the same 800 number and get the Parts department they don' t sell the DIC8300 separately (supposidely). But the MOK8300 is only $46.40 (cheaper than verizons $79.95). The $46.40 price includes everything except the venturi software and verizon' s automatic setup disc; just check audiovox link above (but verizon should give their setup disk for free or just set it up manually).

I' ll report back with some more verizon info. For now I know the verizon Mobile Office Kit does include: Venturi software (free download off net; which doubles data rate to 28.8K), Quicklink Mobile (by Smith Micro) and a phone book mangager that allows you to transfer your cell phone book back and forth from your computer for ease in editing. Verizon did mention they have some software that makes the initial setup easier on their system but sound like this can be don manually. Oh yeah, they give an access number so you don' t need any dialup ISP account (so rule that out as any complication). Once again, I' ll report back with some more verizon info.

The only real relevant question now is: How to get a good deal on the Venturi software. Right now I can get all the other software but this. I would rather spend $46.40 and save $30 bucks but the venturi software would be missing. So....how to find venturi software between $0 and $30????

cooly-o -> RE: Lkg 4 deal: cellphone to computer " Mobile Office Kit" : " for free" dialup access (3/12/2003 3:24:12 PM)

Looks like Verizon customers can download from Venturi compression software form it' s manufacturer' s Fourelle website:

http://www.fourelle.com/tech_support/Verizon_legal.htm

I believe it' s the " Venturi for the Verizon Wireless CDPD Network" that works with the basic service (not the Verizon service " Express Network" that you have to pay for).

The software appears to be stand alone since the above site says " Previous versions of Venturiā„¢ must be uninstalled before upgrading"

The Verizon helper setup disk is called " Verizon Wireless Mobile Office Configuration CD" . Ref: http://www.verizonwireless.com/ics/plsql/accessory_mart.accessories?p_hdr_id=&p_make=Mobile+Office&p_model=Products
(this link also has info on Motorola v60/120/720, Kyocera 2035/2135/2235, LG TM510/VX1/VX10/VX2000, Audiovox 8300/9100/9150/9155/9500, Samsung A310)

I' ve verified that the only thing that the " Verizon Wireless Mobile Office Config. CD" does is just set up Dialup Networking like any old dialup. The nationwide number (really just a code on their system) is #777. If you need any help in setting it up just call their Mobil Office dept. (866-890-2357, 2).

So here it is for my Phone (for Audiovox CDM-8300 phone [I negotiated for free]):

- Audiovox MOK8300 Kit
(includes USB Cable, Quicklink Mobile, Phone Book Manager) $46.40

-Setup your new dialup access (#777 for the basic [free] service)

-Download Venturi software for free (to increase your download speed):

That saves me close to 50% or over $30.
