Just went to Sears to check the tv out....VERY dissapointing pic quality. This tv clearly had the worst reception of all the tvs there. You get what you pay for.

Used my Sears card and it automatically took 10% off to take the pre-tax total to $699. This is a smoking hot deal. I have yet to read a bad review.

This is the old bait and switch that TV salespersons do. They get you in the store with a super deal and then they have that TV with all of the color adjustments way off to make it look bad compared to the others....so you buy a more expensive TV. Don't be fooled by this trick. Read the user reviews on CNET.

Comment for the one complaining about the picture quality, no you're getting HALF of what you'd pay for! You can't get a house-brand thirty-two inch 720p for this price! You want to pay full price or more for something better, go for it.

i just went to sears to check this tv out. it was displayed next to an aquos and the picture quality looked bad compared to the aqous. i hit the menu button and the sharpness, contrast etc settings were set very low, under 45%. plus the tv was using only the coaxial input....hmmm

This is an excellent HDTV for the money, with 1080p and three HDMI imputs. We have it (as of today ;) after reading the review in hometheatermag.com: I agree that this is a very good quality product that benefits from an external set of speakers. In a smaller room at a reasonable viewing distance (8') the sound is fine but benefits from being combined with a surround sound system.

In order to calibrate your TV, I recommend a good reference disc such as the Monster/ISF HDTV Calibration Wizard DVD

If you have a Sears card, it's an additional 10% off. Not a bad deal.

Oh, and BTW, we've purchased a couple of CE product at our local Sears as they price match with Best Buy and Good Guys (even Fry's!) and add 10% of the difference.

I would go down to the Sears and have them hook a quality HD feed directly up to it, in a lot of the stores they have split the signal so many times or otherwise jacked it up so it does look like crap. Have the salesmen actually work for the sale and prove to you that the TV doesn't suck if you're concerned about it... bottom line is that 700 bucks for a 42" 1080p plasma is a steal. Although, I admit the prices are going to continue to do nothing but fall-- especially on the older style plasmas.

I have seen conflicting reports that this is 1080i and not 1080p. Can someone confirm one way or the other?

So, here's the scoop on 1080p vs. 1080i.

    It's really neither. ;)

This HDTV has 3x HDMI "Simplay HD 1080p Compatible Inputs." As noted on the review in hometheatermag.com (above), this plasma has a 1024x1080 resolution which they refer to as "1080 minus the 'p'." The horizontal resolution is not 1920, but with the 1080 vertical resolution, the set is a 1080p display... but "not all 1,080 lines are illuminated at the same time, as they are in a true progressive display." More from the article:

"To fit all 1,080 lines on that 42-inch glass substrate, this display employs the technology formerly known as ALiS (Alternate Lighting of Surfaces), now dubbed HD1080. In a standard plasma design, each row of pixels requires two electrode strips (one at the top and one at the bottom), so every two rows require four strips. HD1080 shares one electrode strip between each pair of rows, so every two rows require three electrode strips. This reduction in the overall number of electrode strips allows for more space to fit 1,080 rows. The trade-off is that the display can't illuminate both rows at the same time, so the plasma alternately lights each row every sixtieth of a second. In other words, at any given sixtieth of a second, you're seeing 540 lines, somewhat akin to a 1080i CRT display."

    As noted on Amazon.com...

"With a unique 1280 x 1080 resolution, the P42H401 has over 1,000 lines of vertical resolution, allowing it to have a line-for-line match of incoming 1080i TV signals. While it is not the full 1080p resolution, it has a better resolution than 720p panels at a similar price. Picture quality is further enhanced, thanks to ClearWindow technology that reduces the visibility of a grid structure and maximizes brightness and clarity."

Also see the Hitachi web site at hitachi P42H401 and the wikipedia comparison of 1080i vs 1080p.

Regardless of p vs. i, we find tonite that this is a very impressive TV for the money. The set supports 1080i and 1080p, as well as 480i/p and 720p.

Fabulous deal, got ours one day early at our local PX, who matched the Sears price (which also saved us on the sales tax, so we didn't save the 10% from the Sears card and ended up paying a total of $35 more than what the Sears price would have been...not too bad).
Picture quality is awesome with using our high definition cable hook-up, maybe wasn't so good in the store as others said because of the lack of that?
Highly encouraged as a pre-holiday present for your family!
(and a great picture for using our Wii games!! Just finished playing Super Mario 8!)

btw, this television sells for around $1000 on pricegrabber. So you really are only saving $200.

None of the sears in my area has it. Does anyone know if they sell the floor model for a discount? if so does this appear as inventory on the website or do I have to go there and talk to someone about this? Thanks!
