MrRetroGamer -> OfficeDepot Leather Chair deal - will this work? (1/10/2004 10:49:03 AM)

The deal was from about 2 days ago:

Furniture At Work Executive Leather Chair $69.99 - $20 in link - $30 rebate = $19.99 shipped free. item 680119 Add $5.01 to pass $75. (Thanks Marc)

Please print rebate forms out immediately.

Update: Rebate says chair needs to be purchased for $69.99

Do you think there will be a problem if the Chair was purchased with a $20 off coupon if the rebate says that the chair MUST be purchased for the $69.99 price and it also says "Not valid with any other promotions"?

What are you experiences when it comes to something like this? Am I screwed?

Old deal. read the rebate, you have to buy it for that price stated & rebate comes from that amount. I fyou buy cheaper they take that from the rebate.

So if I understand you correctly, if the total rebate was for $30 and I used a $20 coupon already, I would only get back $10 for the rebate? Or will they just invalidate the entire rebate and give me back nothing? Thanks in advance.

I posted a response about this deal when it first showed up about 4 months ago.

IMO, this a form of PRICE FIXING because the rebate sponsor is REQUIRING the consumer to purchase a product at a SET price in order to get a rebate. I have no idea how this offer can be legal.

Back to your question. Call the toll-free number on the rebate form. Ask your question and document the response. Let us know the answer you received just for the sake of curiosity.

//That kind of sucks

I was wondering about this type of situation
I bought 120gb hdd and leather chair this last monday
Used 25 off 200 coupon and both items had rebates

If they only give you the SET price, then it would sort of kill the reason for using the coupon

Well, I almost feel like going to the local OfficeDepot this week and purchasing that chair again just to get a good receipt - then photocopy the receipt and return the chair immediately. I really do not want to get screwed on this. I mean it's an OK chair for $50 but it would be much better for only $20! [;)]

Hmmm......I'm not sure if we're talking about the same chair. If so, look at your rebate form closely.

The form I read (actually back in August 2003 which I saved to my hard drive) specifically states the following:

"LIMIT ONE REBATE PER HOUSEHOLD
Item must be purchased at regular retail value of $69.99
Rebate savings not to exceed total purchase price of $39.97
THIS OFFER NOT VALID WITH ANY OTHER PROMOTIONS."

The second line above seems to at least verge on price fixing. (How can they legally require you to pay a particular price for an item in order to qualify for a rebate? Is this a possible loophole in those laws? I dunno but I think it stinks! [&:] )

The last line seems to exclude the use of coupons and could possibly be used to deny the rebate if a coupon was used for the purchase.

OK......I just went to the OD website and pulled up the "new" rebate form for this chair. It is essentially identical to the one I have saved except for the valid dates and the third line about "rebate savings" has been deleted.

Still looks like price fixing to me. Maybe a call to a State Attorney General office to get a clarification on "price fixing" in conjunction with rebate offers might provide some information as to the legality of this requirement.

Kairi -> RE: OfficeDepot Leather Chair deal - will this work? (1/11/2004 2:47:23 AM)

//Yeah, probably the same chair, but different rebate terms.

Actually, I think OM doesn't issue rebate booklets and such anymore. The rebate printed on the cash register paper. Just gotta fill that out and things are cool. I don't think mine had SeT PRICE fixing, so it might be cool.

MrRetroGamer -> UPDATE - NOT GOOD! RE: OfficeDepot Leather Chair deal - will this work? (1/13/2004 9:11:24 AM)

Here is an email reply back from the rebate handler for this item:

quote:

Dear Mr *****,

Thank you for your rebate inquiry. At this time, if you have received any discount at all on any purchase, you are unable to submit for this rebate offer, your rebate will be not be qualified. In order to submit for your rebate offer, you would need to show the chair purchase on a separate receipt with no discount, or coupon used. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you, thank you and have a wonderful day.

Happy Holidays!

Just thought I'd update everyone on this. I called OD and got a service rep who understood my story. The said that since I already got $20 off with the coupon but I wasn't eligible for the $30 rebate, they would send me a $10 gift card to make up for it. After about 2 weeks, I called the same rep and said I didn't get the $10 giftcard yet, they apologised because they didn't submit the info correctly and offered up a $20 credit card refund which did get processed. Oh, BTW, I submitted the rebate anyway and just got my $30 rebate check the other day! [:D]
