Military Families Sacrifices
Author Unknown

You probably didn't realize who was sitting next to you.
You rattled on about how silly this anti-terrorist war is,
and that it's just a political ploy.
You said you'd never let your son run off to fight,
and you'd throw a fit if they just sent your husband off.

At that point, I almost turned around and told you who I am.
I am a military spouse.

Life in the military has never been easy.
It means low pay with no overtime,
watching your husband go to work with a fever
because the doctor didn't deem him sick enough for the day off.
It means years of rules and protocol that wear on you
like a dripping faucet late at night.

Don't even get me going on the weekly inspection of our yards.
We live with Terms like "Exercise" which means 12 hour shifts.
And "TDY," which means your spouse is gone for up to 180 days.
And "Remotes," which means your spouse is gone for longer than 180 days.
And finally, "PCS," which means your whole family is going on this ride.

Don't get me wrong, whining is not my intent here.
While the road we've been down in the military
hasn't always been paved; it's been a good life.

My kids know you don't wait to make friends
because you never know how long they'll be here.
We know how precious good friends are even when miles separate us.

It wasn't always in vogue to be patriotic.
Sept. 11 helped turn that tide, but flags are fading around here again.

My husband is TDY (temporary duty) right now.
I'm not allowed to tell you where.
I'm 26 days into a 109-day TDY.

There have been too many times I have needed him here.
Forget the running of the home fort-there are kisses and hugs
that should be taking place.
I lie in bed and try to recall what his breathing sounds like next to me-
or I hear the door open and try to envision him walking in from work.
What I would give to hear his clear voice without telephone static and
worrying about how much the phone call will cost us.
Then the deep fear - what if this separation becomes permanent?

Distance is a horrible thief of what is precious,
because it only reminds us of how precious it is.

You kept on talking for a while.

I then realized I was picking up your tab.
You could sit there freely and give your opinion
because of the military families like ours.
We are paying the price for your freedom.

I've heard it said that soldiers of the past, present and future pay for the flag.
Nah, we're the threads it's woven with.

I come from a military family and now have many friends fighting. Thank you Nick, I really hate to hear people whine about how the war effects them, when they really have no idea what it is about.

yup... tell me about it... or folks who listen to their fav politician and think what they say is the exact truth..

Kegger22 -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/2/2004 11:02:16 AM)

I never heard of a favorite politician, unless you are just looking for your favorite lie of all time and just trying to see who can out BS who

[:@]my grandma does that. I don't even like to visit her anymore. You would think she would support our troops considering her husband retired from the Army and fought in Korea. She lives comfortably now because of the men who fight for her freedom everyday.

Highlander -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/2/2004 11:05:32 AM)

which so many seem to forget so easily till something happens.... then what do they do?? Ask the military to go kick their ass... gee... what if we said no next time....

pieohmy -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/2/2004 11:16:29 AM)

If the military refused, everyone would attack them for it....The blame is always on someone else...Unfortunatly it's the American way

popandlockgirl -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/2/2004 11:33:00 AM)

popandlockgirl -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/2/2004 11:35:13 AM)

pieohmy -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/2/2004 11:37:22 AM)

on active duty (non-navy) most of us averaged moving stations every two-three years....

And I know many who prayed the day wouldn't come.... but once it does we do our job... even for whiny, bitchy supposed "Americans" who can't handle the truth.

bubblegum -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/3/2004 9:01:03 AM)

Me....I rarely sleep........[&:][:o][&:][:o][&:]

Highlander -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/3/2004 9:24:01 AM)

I am averaging about 4-5 right now.... work 6 PM to 6 AM.... go drink beer and chat till about 8:30-9, sleep till 1 PM... maybe 2... go to gym.. shower, eat, and go to work. THrow in the occasional movie or laundry to round it out.

we're not exactly sure yet. jacksonville, FL is actually a strong possiblity. a lot of people that have been in key west end up in jacksonville

Highlander -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/4/2004 3:35:44 PM)

I'd rather be THERE than here. I'm going absolutely insane here in key west. it was fun for ummmmmm the first couple months or so but once you do everything....there is nothing left to do. all it is is one big tourist trap. blech [:'(]

Highlander -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/5/2004 11:18:19 AM)

very true dear... very true. you and the Hubby ever want to go overseas ... say Rota, Spain or Sigonella, Italy (Sicily)... very nice naval stations...

BTW... where is your sig from Jen?

popandlockgirl -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/5/2004 11:20:23 AM)

we'd LIKE too....unfortunately....it's a pain when you have dogs. they have to be in a kennel for like 6 months before they can even go there.
the sig is from willy wonka....it's veruca salt's song

Highlander -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/5/2004 11:22:33 AM)

Ahhh... yes dogs... when i got orders to Germany back in the 90's i gave my golden retriever to some college gals.... I hated to do it, but they babied her and I knew she'd be good for them...

I think quarantine is based on country.... Germany was 30 days.... England... 60, etc.

Highlander -> RE: A poem for thought. (1/5/2004 11:23:08 AM)

seems like sigs many are using are from songs... I just cannot always guess which one.
