I got a dell dim. 4550 about a year ago and it was whisper quiet when i got it, but now it is quite a bit louder (because of the internal fan that blows on the processor). I was j/w if it was ok to put some WD-40 on the bearings inside the fan, to make it quieter (after removing the whole fan as to not hit any other componants, and cleaning the dust etc. from the whole area).

I would rather see you use a type of dry lubricant, if the bearings are sealed nothing will get in to penetrate them, but if you can penetrate the bearing with a lube WD-40 is a oil based and wet so dust and dirt would collect and form on it faster

best bet is to just blast that sucker with canned air...
if that doesn't solve it, dont know...
if WD40 is conductive... dont, if its not, go for it =P

Well, i decided just to try it out (if it fails i can just buy a new fan), and the fan did get quite a big quieter, and it still works, so so far so good.

I use WD-40 on all four fans in my computer box every now and then..... works like a dream too.

I would think it would make the dust and dirt cling then

they both apply.....if it's moving and not supposed to use duct tape, it's not moving and it's supposed to use wd-40

no... no dust collection here at all. Course they are good sized fans and I do keep the area pretty dust and dirt free where my computer sits.
